Dreams That Money Can Buy
(Hans Richter, 1947)
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Cartel de Louise Lockhart Comentario del BFI

Berlin-born Hans Richter - Dadaist, painter, film theorist and filmmaker - was for four decades one of the most influential members of the cinematic avant-garde. Richter assembled some of the century's liveliest artists as co-creators of Dreams That Money Can Buy, his most ambitious attempt to bring the work of the European avant-garde to a wider cinema audience. Among its admirers is film director David Lynch.

Joe, a young man down on his luck, discovers he has the power to create dreams, and sets up a business selling them to others. The 'dreams' he gives to his clients are the creations of Max Ernst, Fernand Lger, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder and Richter himself, and the result is by turns playful, hypnotic, satirical, charming and nightmarish. Dreams That Money Can Buy is a film in seven segments namely:

* Desire Director, Writer - Max Ernst
* The Girl with the Prefabricated Heart Director, Writer - Fernand Lger
* Ruth, Roses and Revolvers Director, Writer - Man Ray
* Discs Director, Writer - Marcel Duchamp; Music - John Cage
* Ballet Director, Writer - Alexander Calder
* Circus Director, Writer - Alexander Calder
* Narcissus Director, Writer - Hans Richter

Overall Director, Writer, Editor Hans Richter
Photography Arnold Eagle
Producers Hans Richter, Peggy Guggenheim, Kenneth Macpherson
Production Company Art of This Century Films

DESIRE
directed by Max Ernst; music by Paul Bowles
featuring the costume drama of 'amour fou', livid colours, fevered eroticism, lace, velvet deress, dry ice mists. the dream of a methodicial man, whose wife complains of his systematic exaction. but his interest in semi-erotica belies his passion for art.

THE GIRL WITH THE PREFABRICATED HEART
directed by Fernard Leger; lyrics by jean latoche, sung by libby holman, josh white
a romance story between two mannequins. the loveliest girl mannequin who refused to let herself fall in love, for sure that hte emotion would surely dissolve her. (her rejection of him dissolved him instead)

RUTH ROSES AND REVOLVERS
directed and written by Man Ray
a satire of cinema, where the audience is asked to treat the film as instructions tob e followed exactly and obediently without question. a visual treat with vivid contrasts - the garden in the background with trees starkly bare, and a woman's unnatural laughter.

DISCS
directed by Marcel Duchamp; music by John Cage
a varation on Duchamp's earlier piece - "Nude descending". revolving, superimposed images of discs spinning. this is the strangely poetic dream of a hardened hoodlum. joe says of him: "if he wasn't so much an extrovert, he could have been a poet"

BALLET & CIRCUS
directed by Alexander Calder
ballet consisted of the dance of floating mobiles of various shapes and sizes.
circus was a magnificient circus of wire figures - mechanisms, moving parts, and springs. the dream of a blind old man, who later makes a proposition to joe: "Are you a dream dealer? I will sell one to you, for i have so many, you see."

NARCISSUS
directed by Hans Richter; music by Louis Applebaum
Joe's own dream. One day he turns blue in colour, his "friends" leave him, and he is scorned. he ponders over why blue is the worst colour to be. he calls the colour blue the "the final retreat into self". and now that he is blue, familiar objects because alien. their shadows morph into menacing shapes, but he escapes, following a blue thread out into the open. a couple of men block his path, they claim to have the right to be in somebody else's way. Allusions to post-war days - "now that the war is over, it is time for indulgence and decadence". He starts to climb a ladder, but as he climbs, he realises that the rungs disappear below him, and as he climbs higher, the rungs above also disappear. "Nothing infront or behind me!" He meets his dream lady lying in a bathtub, but it offers him scant relief. Surreal.

PILOTPRIX eres un crack!!!! :plas: :plas: :plas:

Esto es buenísimo.
Duchamp!!!! Max Ernst!!!! Leger!!!.........

Ruth Roses And Revolver 1987
Directed by Helen Gallagher
Written by David Lynch
Presented by David Lynch

Lynch made this documentation (named after a film by Man Ray) on Surrealism for the British BBC television program Arena. In each program he presents extracts from what he considers films and filmmakers most significant to his own work.
Including:

Entr'acte, Rene Claire/ Francis Picabia, 1924
"The greatest influence on my work is the city of Philadelphia. Man Ray was born in Philadelphia..."

Emak-Bakia, Man Ray, 1926

Vormittagspuck, Hans Richter, 1926
"Things beneath the surface, strange feelings of death, or opposites, or time...How exciting it must have been to have been a filmmaker in the early days of cinema, because not only was it so magical to see paintings begin to move, but they could start altering time..."

Man With A Movie Camera, Dziga Vertov, 1929
Lynch quotes Sergei Eisenstein's view of Vertov "a visual hooligan!"

Blood of a Poet, Jean Cocteau, 1930
"Cocteau is the heavyweight of surrealism."

Dreams That Money Can Buy, Hans Richter, 1946
"Films should have a surface story but underneath things should happen - things should resonate."

The Girl With The Prefabricated Heart, Ferdinand Leger (from Dreams That Money Can Buy Hans Richter), 1946
"Anything that looks human but isn´t looks frightening."

Discs, Macel Duchamp, based on his own painting "Nude Descending a Staircase" accompanied by the music of John Cage (included in Dreams That Money Can Buy Hans Richter), 1946

Desire, Max Ernst (from Dreams That Money Can Buy Hans Richter), 1946
"I'm very happy to be a fellow traveller with any one of these guys..."
