Based on a popular music revue of the imperial era, Richard Oswald tells the story of a provincial insect repellent producer who follows a vaudeville star he loves to Berlin and finds himself in a whirlpool of voluntary and involuntary adventures. He encounters revue girls, policemen, Indian Radjas and wrestlers. The scene changes from sparkling restaurants and dance cafés to pubs and police stations. Oswald's comedy is an anarchic-seeming, shrill ramble through the Berlin of the "wild" 1920s and its notorious nightlife. Created on original locations, Oswald's film also provides an impressive portrait of the city of four million at the time, with its hectic pace, its construction sites and its social contrasts.
Long thought to have been lost, A GREAT NIGHT was rediscovered in the State Russian Film Archive Gosfilmofond and digitally restored by Omnimago GmbH in 2019.
