SINOPSIS Joan siempre ha sabido donde va, desde sus primeros años hasta el momento de su inminente boda con el dueño de una empresa importante. Pero cuando viaja al Norte para celebrar su matrimonio en una isla escocesa, como está previsto, descubre que en la vida hay algo más que el éxito material.



Un poco de historia y filmo de:
Michael Powell (Gran Bretaña 1905-1990) formó junto a Emeric Pressburger la asociación productor-guionista-director más famosa del cine británico, trabajando conjuntamente en las películas británicas más arriesgadas y experimentales de los años cuarenta. Indagan en temas inquietantes para el hombre contemporáneo, con una informalidad que no se le suele suponer a este cine. Aunque es difícil separar las contribuciones de ambos, Powell escribía el guión inicial, era el director en el plató y proporcionaba la mayoría de las ideas visuales. Brillantes como pareja, separados sus carreras decayeron. Powell debe su aprendizaje a las películas inglesas de bajo presupuesto, forjando su estilo a partir de los maestros del cine mudo, e inspirándose en el trabajo de Walt Disney y de Ludwig Berger. Le preocupaba especialmente la expresión visual, y buscó una imagen que, no siendo deslumbrante, tuviera la capacidad de sugerir misterio en el fondo.

La dejo anotada hasta que pueda hacer un hueco, a pesar de la ausencia de subtitulos. La guardare junto al ripeo de "Vida y muerte del Coronel Blimp"que baje hace algun tiempo y al que desgraciadamente tampoco acompañan subtitulos por el momento
Hace un par de años el Festival de Cine de San Sebastian dedico una retrospectiva a los autores. Es una de las filmografias mas curiosas que he podido ver.

La película nos cuenta la historia de una mujer que desde muy pequeña tenía claro lo que quería hacer en la vida, para ella el dinero y la posición eran tan importantes que estaba dispuesta a todo con tal de conseguirlo. Cuando le surge la oportunidad de conseguir un buen partido no lo duda y se promete a un hombre que por su edad podría ser perfectamente su padre. Para la boda tiene que desplazarse hasta la isla de Killoran, ubicada en el noroeste de Escocia. Ante la imposibilidad de que la lleven a la isla debido al mal tiempo que agita las aguas, se ve obligada a esperar en un pueblecito costero en donde conocerá a Torquil McNeil, un oficial naval británico que se encuentra de permiso durante la segunda guerra mundial. Los sentimientos que va experimentando hacia él la ponen en una difícil encrucijada, buscar la seguridad del dinero, o sea, el objetivo que se ha marcado toda su vida, o por el contrario dejar de lado el dinero y hacer caso a su corazón. Young middle-class Englishwoman Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) is determined to have the finer things in life, and to that end she plans to marry Sir Robert Bellinger (Norman Shelley), a wealthy, middle-aged industrialist whom she does not love. En route to the Island of Mull, where her future husband resides, Joan is stranded in a colorful Scottish seacoast town. Inclement weather keeps her grounded for a week, during which time she falls in love with young, insouciant naval officer Torquil McNeil (Roger Livesey). Ignoring the dictates of her heart (not to mention common sense), Joan stubbornly insists upon heading out to sea towards her marriage of convenience, but the exigencies of Mother Nature finally convince her that her future resides on the Mainland. A winner all the way, I Know Where I'm Going is full of large and small delights, including a wonderful sense of regional detail and endearing, three-dimensional characterizations (even the mercenary heroine is a likeable character). AMG REVIEW: Michael Powell's and Ermeric Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going was an unexpected movie at the time of its release. The two filmmakers, who usually shared joint credit as writer-producer-directors, had previously delighted audiences (and outraged officialdom) with their unusual films dealing with war-related subjects: 49th Parallel, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and A Canterbury Tale. I Know Where I'm Going was set during the war but takes place in Scotland, far from the fighting; the only sign of the world war being fought is the presence of some men in uniform, the austerity of life, and the fact that the hero (Roger Livesey) has only a short leave home, his first visit in five years. But the real focus of I Know Where I'm Going was how people would live, and approach life, after the war: specifically, whether the heroine (Wendy Hiller) would continue to be motivated by materialism or whether she (and the audience) would learn something better. Powell and Pressburger, who went corporately and creatively under the name of The Archers, had a message to send: that there were more joys to be found in the texture of life than in any material comforts, and that this lesson would be a more vital result of the war than the military victory that was already taken for granted. In many ways, I Know Where I'm Going was the first postwar film, anticipating such American classics as The Best Years of Our Lives, It's a Wonderful Life, and even, on the darker side of life, Crossfire. -- Bruce Eder
