Tristeza infinita.

Oliver está triste, muy triste. Su padre Hal acaba de morir, padecía un cáncer. También su madre murió poco tiempo antes de una enfermedad terminal, momento que Hal, tras 44 años de matrimonio, aprovechó para "salir del armario" y explorar su faceta gay. En esa etapa Oliver, artista incapaz de lograr relaciones duraderas con las mujeres con las que ha salido, cuida a su padre, y acepta la "nueva cara" de su progenitor, que se traduce entre otras cosas en una relación con el joven homesexual Andy. Los recuerdos de Oliver de la viudez de su padre se combinan con su situación actual, solo en compañía del perro de Hal, hasta que entra en su vida una actriz francesa, Anna, de la que tal vez se esté enamorando.

Tristeza, infinita tristeza. Es lo que trasluce este film escrito y dirigido por Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), basado en su propia experiencia personal, la muerte de sus padres y la homosexualidad del progenitor recién descubierta, recreadas libremente. La nueva relación padre-hijo a partir de los "inputs" de la condición gay y la enfermedad de Hal al descubierto, más el progresivo conocimiento y amor de Oliver y Anna, son los ejes sobre los que se asienta la película. Pero todo traspasado por un "mood" pesado, insoportable, en que se diría que la felicidad es una quimera, un estado deseable pero no alcanzable. Conviven dolor, sufrimiento y tristeza, pero es sobre todo esta última la que pesa como el plomo.
Mills, con modos narrativos audaces, voz en off y collages que tratan de entender la época en que Hal no podía hablar abiertamente de homosexualidad, denuncia los prejuicios del pasado, el disparate que sería, desde su punto de vista, tratar de disimular, crear el ambiente falso de una familia "normal", donde no cabe que él sea gay y ella judía. Pero el cineasta es probablemente consciente de su confusión, de sus propias contradicciones, pues Hal quería a su esposa, de su amor nació Oliver, él quiso mantener la comedia, y se entiende que le fue fiel mientras ella vivió. Y si en la actualidad puede celebrar el orgullo gay, llevar banderas arco iris y poner anuncios de contactos para vivir una promiscuidad semejante a la de su pareja Andy, no está claro que esta "libertad" le haga más feliz que antaño.
Quizá lo que se detecta en esta exploración del amor, es la estrechez de miras con que se maneja el concepto, pues al final parece que lo deseable es la autosatisfacción personal del momento, el sentirse a gusto con uno mismo y más o menos comprendido por los seres queridos. Está ausente en todo momento el sentido moral, es como si no existiera, convenciones de épocas oscuras, y la entrega mutua sin condiciones en que consiste el amor se presenta con demasiadas limitaciones.
La película cuenta con tres personajes que permiten grandes interpretaciones, y Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer y Mélanie Laurent aprovechan la oportunidad. Hay ciertamente momentos muy bien resueltos, como la fiesta donde se conocen Oliver y Anna, en que ella no puede hablar (DeCine21).

Gradually, Oliver begins to see his father in a whole new light. Later, Oliver falls for pretty French actress Anna (Mélanie Laurent) after a chance meeting at a costume party. The more intimate Oliver and Anna become, the more they both realize they share one defining character flaw -- the moment any relationship turns serious, they run away. In essence, Mills' gentle drama is about the moment we choose to break those cycles, and the way we respond when we notice others doing the same. It's a concept that holds boundless possibilities for exploring character, and by keeping the cast small, the perceptive writer/director affords himself the opportunity to do it in a way that genuinely resonates. We may not be able to personally identify with Oliver's relationship problems, or Hal's fears of losing everything he holds dear should his sexuality be discovered, but we can still recognize the patterns they fall into, and perhaps use them to draw parallels to our own lives.If all of this makes Beginners sound more enlightening than entertaining, Mills has ensured that we remain fully invested in the characters by casting actors who bring complexity to roles that could have easily been one-dimensional. Even though Oliver's friends mock him for being overly austere, the more we get to know him, the more we gradually start to realize there is another, more colorful, side to his personality -- one that isn't afraid to partake in a bit of vandalism in order to blow off some steam -- and that while his relationship problems may inform his personality, they certainly don't define him. McGregor, equally adept at high-profile Hollywood fare and more challenging indie projects such as this, delivers a gorgeously low-key performance opposite esteemed Oscar nominee Plummer, whose nuanced portrayal of Hal may well end up being the highlight of a long and fruitful career. Co-star Mary Page Keller brings a sense of desperate quirkiness to the role of Georgia -- a woman who knowingly sacrificed a comfortable life for the love of a good man born at the wrong time; Visnjic portrays Hal's likeable young lover with a balance of self-realization and insecurity not usually granted to peripheral characters; and Laurent is a captivating combination of mysteriousness and curious accessibility as the actress who recognizes the sadness in Oliver's eyes.Though finicky viewers may be put off by the heavyhearted mood of the film and Olivier Bugge Coutté's creative editing, Beginners is nevertheless a life-affirming drama that touches on complex themes with an honest, astute wisdom that extends well beyond the central issue of sexuality. For moviegoers in search of something other than the latest summer tent pole or second-run hit, this is precisely the kind of Hollywood counterprogramming that stimulates the intellect instead of simply tickling the corneas. -- Jason Buchanan
