Sinopsis: El cierre de la fábrica de acero de Yorkshire deja sin trabajo a casi toda la población masculina. Gaz, uno de los obreros afectados, perderá el derecho de ver a su hijo si no consigue dinero para pagar la pensión de manutención familiar a su mujer. En medio de la desesperación, se le ocurre una idea, a primera vista disparatada, y se la plantea a los amigos que están en la misma situación: organizar un espectáculo de strip-tease. (FILMAFFINITY)

Peter Cattaneo (o lo que es lo mismo: Ken Loach con sentido del humor) sorprendió al mundo con esta estupenda ópera prima basada en un guión tan ingenioso como cautivador de Simon Beaufoy (que se merece más de la mitad del mérito). El asunto: unos obreros del metal en paro sólo ven un modo de conseguir unas libras esterlinas: enseñando sus cuerpos antidanone. El problema: que para enseñar sus cosas antes tendrán que esconder otras: su timidez y su orgullo. Así, combinando una simpática comedia (la escena de la cola del paro vale más que mil muecas de Jim Carrey) con un amargo drama (inmenso Tom Wilkinson -el antiguo jefe-), este taquillazo mundial consiguió no sólo llegar a la final de los Oscar, sino también el unánime favor de crítica y público... y miles de sonrisas ante el esplendor de las barrigas cerveceras más entrañables de la historia -con permiso de Homer Simpson, claro está-. Un filme irrepetible, en el que todos sus elementos parecen hallarse en estado de gracia. Y además, una muestra emblemática de comedia comprometida, que logra lo más difícil: que el espectador se carcajee con situaciones que, en el fondo, no tienen maldita la gracia. Los personajes desbordan credibilidad, los gags se suceden sin pausa (atención a la secuencia del baile en la oficina del paro) y el filme desprende acidez y mala uva al tiempo que elabora un canto a la dignidad de lo más emotivo. Gaz (personaje interpretado por Robert Carlyle) es un trabajador en paro de Sheffield que tiene un hijo que mantener. Tras haberlo intentado todo, no le queda otra salida que convencer a su grupo de amigos con una genial idea para ganar mucho dinero en poco tiempo. Les convence de que un strip-tease masculino hará que la gente se gaste dinero en adquirir su localidad. En un principio, todos aceptan y se ponen a ensayar; sin embargo, por diversos problemas personales, no todos acaban estando seguros de que llegarán hasta el final.
Uno de los mayores éxitos del cine británico es esta comedia que resulta muy divertida de ver, y a la vez reflexiona sobre el grave problema del desempleo de la sociedad actual y la lucha del individuo por mantener la dignidad; de modo que su fondo tiene un componente trágico. El realizador supo combinar eficazmente la comedia y el drama y contó con una excelente lista de actores. A la cabeza, Robert Carlyle, habitual del cine de Ken Loach (Riff-Raff), que anteriormente había logrado un gran éxito con el filme Trainspotting de Danny Boyle. Junto a él, Tom Wilkinson y Mark Addy, a pesar de ser desconocidos en el cine, realizan unos impresionantes trabajos. La principal baza de la película es un guión que se toma la tragedia de los protagonistas en clave de humor. Está escrito por Simon Beaufoy (DeCine21).

AMG SYNOPSIS: Six guys with nothing left to lose try losing their clothing for fun and profit in this international hit comedy. Gaz (Robert Carlyle) and Dave (Mark Addy) are two former steelworkers in the British industrial town of Sheffield who have been devastated by the economic downturn in their community. Gaz is threatened with losing visitation rights with his son if he can't pay his child support, while Dave feels emasculated by his inability to support his wife. One day, Gaz stops by a local pub for a drink and is told it's women only tonight -- the Chippendales male exotic dancing troupe is playing, and they are demanding a hefty cover charge. Gaz decides there's nothing a bunch of pantywaists from America can do that he and his pals can't do better, and decides to form his own crew of male strippers, called "Hard Steel." However, the local talent pool leaves a bit to be desired. Gaz isn't bad looking, but Dave is a bit heavy and very self conscious about it. Horse (Paul Barber) was probably hot stuff at Soul Night in the mid-70's, but his joints don't move like they used to. Guy (Hugo Speer) can't dance to save his life, but makes the troupe because ... well, let's say he and Dirk Diggler would have a lot to say to each other. Lomper (Steve Huison) is sometimes too busy attempting suicide to practice. And Gerald (Tom Wilkinson), their choreographer, isn't much on male exotic dancing -- ballroom dancing is more his speed. While "Hard Steel"'s performances are more amusing then enticing, for the first time since they lost their jobs the men have a reason to get up in the morning; joining the group has given them a circle of friendship, and a renewed sense of purpose. Combining broad comedy with believable and well-drawn characters, The Full Monty was a major box-office hit both in England and the United States and was nominated for Academy Awards as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. -- Mark Deming
AMG REVIEW: The Full Monty is a pleasant blend of British working-class comedy and socially conscious drama similar in tone and theme to Raining Stones (1993) or Brassed Off (1996). Thoroughly entertaining, the film also has a deeper message about the economic dilemma between need and self-respect. Though many films have featured protagonists caught between survival and crime, this may be the first film to subject its hero to the choice between survival or stripping. Is the emasculation of poverty worse than the emasculation of revealing it all in a pub? It's a light question, but director Peter Cattaneo and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy generate enough human drama to connect with American as well as English audiences. Robert Carlyle's warm turn as the down-and-out leader of the bunch of low-rent Chippendales was a revelation to audiences who knew him best as the psychopathic Begbie from Trainspotting (1996). The low-budget production was a surprise hit with the American Motion Picture Academy, nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. -- Brendon Hanley
