Gente muy hecha polvo.Johnny, un inmoral y cínico con la lengua muy suelta, acaba de llegar a Londres desde Manchester, con una bolsa como todo equipaje. Se presenta en casa de una antigua novia, Louise, y allí altera con su comportamiento la vida de los que le rodean. Empieza por la yonki Sophie con la que mantiene un sexo compulsivo, casi sadomasoquista. No será la única. Se irá topando con personajes variopintos, desde una camarera a un guardia de seguridad, pasando por una exhibicionista y un tipo que se dedica a fijar carteles. Por supuesto se mete en líos, y acabará recibiendo una solemne paliza.
Mike Leigh (Secretos y mentiras) está al frente de esta película que, para sorpresa de algunos, obtuvo premios al mejor director y al mejor actor en Cannes. El británico recoge una galería de personajes tremendamente enfermizos, y en el mejor de los casos solos, tremendamente solos. Lo hace con gran vigor, una energía inusitada que se plasma en una realización de un estilo muy particular, de cuidada fotografía e inteligente uso de la partitura musical. El problema es la historia, ya de por sí, floja y poco interesante, reiterativa en exceso, dura y tan limitada como los personajes que la llenan (DeCine21).
Los variados problemas que experimenta la clase trabajadora inglesa a principios de los años 90, su malestar general y una cierta sensación de desencanto se personifican en el protagonista de "Indefenso": Johnny es un joven procedente de Manchester que una noche, después de violar a una mujer en la oscuridad de un callejón, roba un automóvil y decide conducir hasta Londres en busca de su antigua novia. Todos los personajes que se cruzan en su camino acaban aumentando el número de víctimas de su encolerizada violencia, un odio casi irracional por todo lo que le rodea que cobra vida gestual, física y verbalmente. Sin trabajo y sin un lugar fijo donde quedarse, la película acompaña al protagonista en su viaje a la deriva por las calles de la capital británica.
"Indefenso" es un relato oscuro, por momentos desolador, sobre unos individuos y el paisaje urbano en el que habitan. Leigh sabe sacar partido a la improvisación de sus actores; es, precisamente, en la magistral construcción de los personajes donde recae el mayor peso de la propuesta. La violencia y una sexualidad explícita conviven en la película con notas de humor, las que el director filtra a través de diálogos filosóficos imposibles y situaciones surrealistas (DVD Cameo).
AMG SYNOPSIS: A scathing look at Britain in the post-Thatcher era, Mike Leigh's Naked stars David Thewlis as Johnny, an unemployed layabout with a philosophical bent and a nasty edge. In the opening scene, he's committing rape, and before the credits even roll, he's also stolen a car to flee from Manchester to the London home of an old girlfriend (Lesley Sharp). The film's loose, sprawling narrative follows Johnny as he randomly makes his way through the streets of London, encountering a homeless Scottish couple, a nightwatchman and a series of women whom he charms and discards. He lives defiantly outside of the system, refusing to conform to the demands of anyone (including himself). -- Jason Ankeny
AMG REVIEW: Both hailed and criticized for its bleakness and its basically brutal treatment of women, Naked is an intensely powerful and disturbing motion picture experience. Director Mike Leigh is making a pull-no-punches statement about late 20th century Britain, specifically about the manner in which social systems enable (and allegedly encourage) the strong to abuse the weak. This includes Johnny, a down-and-out drifter with a keen intellect and razor-sharp wit. Victimized by this system, he in turn takes his anger out on those weaker than he, generally women and specifically those who express feelings of warmth or concern toward him. The brutality with which Johnny (and others) treat many of the women in the film is difficult to take; indeed, much of the film is challenging to watch, as there is a rawness and hopelessness that permeates the film. This is leavened by a great deal of humor, as Johnny's brilliant mind can always come up with surprising and amusing comments; but even the humor is of a black or mean bent. Many will be turned off by all of this, but many will also find it exhilarating, thanks to David Thewlis's brilliant acting and Leigh's assured and masterly handling of the material. Thewlis gives one of the most impressive screen performances of the 1990s; his Johnny may be mean, bitter, and almost unbearably angry, but he can also be charming, witty, and even at times sympathetic. Thewlis conveys the quiet desperation that lies beneath the character's unpleasant characteristics, and makes the viewer feel for him, even as he feels repulsed. It is a fascinating portrait. Naked is often horrible to watch, but those who can do so without looking away will be amply rewarded. -- Craig Butler
