(FILMAFFINITY)
Jakob arrives at the Institute Benjamenta (run by brother and sister Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta) to learn to become a servant. With seven other men, he studies under Lisa: absurd lessons of movement, drawing circles, and servility. He asks for a better room. No other students arrive and none leave for employment. Johannes is unhappy, imperious, and detached from the school's operation. Lisa is beautiful, at first tightly controlled, then on the verge of breakdown. There's a whiff of incest. Jakob is drawn to Lisa, and perhaps she to him. As winter sets in, she becomes catatonic. Things get worse; Johannes notes that all this has happened since Jakob came. Is there any cause and effect? (IMDb)
AMG Synopsis: From the directing team of identical twin brothers Timothy Quay and Stephen Quay, Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life focuses on the experiences of Jakob Von Gunten (Mark Rylance), who has come to the titular institute to train to become a manservant. Amidst a series of unorthodox lessons under the instruction of brother and sister Johannes Benjamenta (Gottfried John) and Lisa Benjamenta (Alice Krige), Jakob becomes attracted to Lisa and she to him. As the magnetism between the two of them intensifies, Lisa's health declines more and more, leading Johannes to question Jakob's influence on her. The screenplay was adapted from the novel Jakob von Gunten by Robert Walser.
AMG Review. Through their award-winning shorts and music videos, the Brothers Quay managed to accumulate a small if fervent cult of admirers, drawn to their distinctive, gothic, and altogether mesmerizing mix of stop motion animation, postmodern fairy tales, classical puppetry, and Freudian nightmares. All of their talents are on display in Institute Benjamenta, their first feature-length film, but it's unfortunate to report that the longer running time has also allowed the brothers to uncover some heretofore unknown weaknesses, such as working with real-live actors. Although the production design and general milieu of the film are breathtaking -- recalling everything from German expressionism to early David Lynch -- the dialogue is stilted to the point of incomprehensibility, and the Quays have a tendency to allow scenes to linger on interminably to ostensibly ratchet up the creepiness factor. This is one instance where the more art-directed the scene, the better it is; unfortunately, the filmmakers have chosen instead to allot copious amounts of time to their flesh-and-blood creations instead of their stuffed-and-sewn ones, and the movie suffers as a result.
