Philip Davidson was sent to jail for murder, although the body of the alleged victim was never found. Fay Lowther, whose testimony convicted him, later married the detective in charge of the case. Now Philip is out, solitary, homeless and embittered. According to him, Fay's testimony had been a lie, and he is going to get even with the people who framed him.
Excellent British noir - with maybe a couple of psychological improbabilities, but who's counting - directed by the brilliant if erratic Robert Hamer, who was even then drinking himself to an early death (John Mills in his autobiography relates a story of a very drunk Hamer walking backwards off a barge and falling into the Thames with a viewfinder glued to his eye). Among the film's many interesting angles is its early portrayal of homosexuality in the London underworld.
