Sinopsis
Los Stamper son una familia de madereros asentada en los bosques de Oregón. Su patriarca, el viejo Henry, ha mantenido siempre una postura independiente, negándose a integrarse en ningún sindicato. Todos los miembros de la familia están cortados por el mismo patrón y esta indomable casta saldrá a flote al iniciarse el acoso de la familia por miembros del sindicato. A tough assignment for co-producer Newman, who took over the direction while starring in this logistically difficult movie. He plays one of the sons in a rugged family of loggers, headed by an irascible father (Fonda) who refuses to join a strike against the lumber company. Newman handles the emotional drama well and directs one outdoor scene with consummate brilliance. Sometimes a Great Notion" is an extremely interesting annd a good example of a genre of action film that flourished in the 1930's in movies about tuna fishermen, bush pilots, high-wire repairmen and just about any physical pursuit you can think of with the possible exception of tolltaking, which lacks the necessary element of danger. As in Howard Hawks's "Only Angels Have Wings," these films are, at their best, considerably less simple-minded than they sound—being expressions of lives lived almost entirely in terms of rugged, essentially individualistic professionalism. Enjoy this movie finally on DVD and don't ask me why.
