Danny Kaye gives a sensitive, understated performance in this screen adaptation of a play about of an oddly-matched pair's escape from Nazi occupied France.
In order to flee from quickly advancing German forces, anti-Semitic Polish Colonel Prokoszny must team up with a man who procures a car for their flight: S.L. Jacobowsky, a Jew who quietly takes the Colonel's racist abuse. But when the colonel's incompetence lands them in the Nazis' clutches, It is Jacobowsky's nimble mind that wins their freedom. And the bigoted Colonel, having found respect for his companion's quick wit, eventually learns a valuable lesson in tolerance and acceptance.
This film was a wonderful vehicle for the talents of Danny Kaye who played a serious, dramatic role instead of the typical zany comedic parts he usually performed. Franz Werfel (a Jew convert to Catholicism) wrote the drama on which this film is based and used much humor (especially in the relationship between Jakobowsky and the Colonel) to take on a serious subject: anti-semitism in Europe during World War II. In order to do this, he had to create stereotypes, which is common in comedy... However, instead of satirizing two Jews, Werfel was making fun of the differences between an anti-semitic Polish aristocrat and a bourgeois Jewish Pole who has the gift of being a survivor. Perhaps, because of this, the reception of the film has been cool.
