History teacher Gabi Teichert previously appeared with a spade in her hand in DEUTSCHLAND IM HERBST (1978), a cinematic comment on Germany in the 1970s, to which Kluge also contributed. In DIE PATRIOTIN, we learn what she is actually looking for. She starts digging again, deeper this time, determined to uncover German history at last. She is tired of simply feeding her pupils German historical events in chronological order, from the crusades to Stalingrad, as directed by the curriculum. "German history", she says, "was so moving that it cannot be propagated in a positive sense." With DIE PATRIOTIN, Kluge has perfected his trademark style, which totally refuses to bow to the linearity and causality of narrative cinema, even refusing a stringent account of its contents.
