Why are we telling these stories?
What are we looking for, here?
What are we trying to ask?
Afar from us, in time and space, this place
Belongs to a potential memory,
To a virtual autobiography.
Our parents or grand fathers could have been here…
Georges Perec is one of the most important and wonderful writer of XX century. This is the documentary he made in 1979 with Robert Bober about Ellis Island, about refugees, about exile. A touching and beautiful travel around the immigrant station in New York harbour, in which 16 million immigrants were processed between 1892 and 1924: an examination of its history and the stories of those who passed through its gates through film and historical documents.
