Comedy.
Working in an Austin, Texas, beauty parlour in 1954, Nadine Hightower endeavours to retrieve some 'art studies' she injudiciously had taken. Her visit to the photographer leaves him dead and her in possession of highly valuable plans of a proposed new road. With both the police and the murderous villains after her she enlists the help of her (almost) ex-husband Vernon, the none too successful owner of the Bluebonnet Bar. Fortunately the thugs are as much no-hopers as the Hightowers.
"Nadine" is an enchanting droll comedy-mystery that I found impossible to resist. Kim Bassinger plays a beautician who manages to convince her estranged and soon to be ex-husband (Jeff Bridges) to help her solve a murder mystery. It evokes the old Grant-Hepburn movies and the screwball comedies of the 1930s. I thought Bassinger and Bridges were hilarious and their wonderful chemistry carries the movie a long way. I also loved Rip Torn as the main villain - he seems to be imitating the great Sidney Greenstreet. It has the simplicity of a "b" movie (in my opinion not a bad thing), and it is high on humor and 1950s atmosphere (thanks to Nestor Almendros' mellowed color cinematography). Director-writer Benton is obviously having fun here, and his inconspicuous and relaxed style fits the movie well. Humor is a very subjective thing, so it is possible that some viewers will find the film a little too coy and old-fashioned. I enjoyed every second of it and I will count this movie as a priceless little gem. It would make a great double feature with Benton's "The Late Show" (a true classic on its own), another movie that pays tribute to the murder-mysteries of yesterday.
