This is a rare chinese tv documentary homage to joris ivens, one of the father of documentary film, one of the greatest filmmaker in the world. You know some ivens' later films were made in china, and since 1939 he made "The 400 Million" in china with his partner Robert Capa, he started nearly half a century relationship with china this old mysterious eastern country, and he directed some important films which recorded chinese peoples' normal life at that time, including War of the 600 Million People (1957), Before Spring (1958), How Yukong Moved the Mountains (1976), and the most famous over 12 hours looong documentary "How Yukong Moved the Mountains" has already become a timeless cinema masterpiece, it along with Antonioni's "China", are the earliest two films which introduced the new china to western peoples. So for memory joris ivens, CNADFS made this tribute film in 1998, his centennial commemoration. Although there are no any subs, but in this film you will see A LOT OF rare footages of his films, including his first short "De Wigwam" (1911) made when he 13 years old, and many other rare-see ivens films like Philips-Radio (1931), "Indonesia Calling (1946)", Pierwsze lata (1947), Song of the Rivers (1954)......and a lot of footages of his last two films "How Yukong Moved the Mountains" and "A Tale of the Wind" (1989), and some life scenes when he lived in china. Still worth seeing.
btw, I'm loooooking for his last film "A Tale of the Wind (1989)", saw some scenes in this film, I think it's one of the most beautiful movie ever made, but I never seen the whole film, is there anybody have it by chance? I thought there's a french subbed copy existing in somewhere...![]()
