Pig.Chicken.Suicide.(Yoshihiko.Matsui,.1981).VHSRip-contender.avi
Here is an exceptionally bizarre Japanese underground flick mixing animal exploitation, Butoh dance and (perhaps somewhat obscure) social satire.
Originally ripped by contender@CrazyMazeys, and kindly reshared by ib50@Karagarga. The quality is very low, but, as the claim is, this movie has never been released in a commercial form.
Directed by Japanese underground legend Yoshihiko Matsui, most famous for his epic film Noisy Requiem, and his early work with maverick Japanese director Sogo Ishii (Gojoe, Crazy Thunder Road), Pig Chicken Suicide is a veritable assault on the senses, mixing violent images of animal slaughter, racial strife and surrealism to tell the story of 2 Koreans living in Japan, whose love is destroyed due to overwhelming racial discrimination .

MATSUI's debut film, "RUSTY EMPTY CAN"(1979), was photographed by Sogo ISHII ; nonetheless the film turned out to be a serious and emotionally painful one unlike ISHII's speedy roller-coaster movies. The film which depicts a homosexual relationship was success at the many film festival held in Japan. "RUSTY EMPTY CAN" is still shown at theaters today as it has become the pioneer of cult movies with devoted fans and approval from Nagisa OSHIMA and Shuji TERAYAMA.
MATSUI shot his second film, "PIG-CHICKEN SUICIDE"(1981). This film depicts two Koreans living in Japan and their love which is torn apart due to racial discrimination. The film was kindly given the opportunity of a long-run showing at Shuji TERAYAMA's theater, "Tenjo-Sajiki-kan". Kazuo HARA, well known as the documentary film director, is the director of photography for this film.
In 1983, MATSUI started to shoot "NOISY REQUIEM"--- a movie which was thought to be impossible to shoot and as Shuji TERAYAMA commented, "would be a scandal if made into a movie".
However, the selection for a suitable cast and location did not go smoothly and thus the shooting was delayed till the next summer. The film was finally released on the 26th of May, 1988, breaking the record of the number of audience at most theaters. Yet the number of viewers shows no declination.
MATSUI's production has been able to pay for all expenses with the success of all films. This is very uncommon for an independent film production.
Although the film was scheduled to be shown at festivals in various countries, unfortunately, it was banned at all places. However, ten years later in 1998, the film was shown in seven cities including GERMANY and NORWAY, DENMARK with favorable reviews...

You bet!
And I doubt a subtitled version will pop up anytime soon...

Ok, but I guess I'll take it nonetheless

Thanks Helge!

That was my first thought too... But, upon some further consideration, I realized that the quality of the original VHS was so low that there is no way anything much could be lost through downsizing.
I've got Noisy Requiem too, and the quality is probably even slightly worse. When I rip it, I do not intend to downsize the video to 272x208, but, on the other hand, I am definitely not gonna keep the 640x480 resolution either... 8O
I think that generally downsizing is a rather subtle question because there is always an interplay between size, temporal/spatial smoothness, compressibility and... well... output blockiness.
But I agree that 272x208 was hardly an optimal solution...

Oh, I don't even know how to do that...
I've only worked with GK and AviSynth. (Even though I've screwed up my first couple or rips, so Trep had to explain to me what IVTC was...

I think the rips I am making now are pretty decent -- at least nobody complained. I had to "waste" quite a lot of time reading the various threads on doom9.org (so, by now, I sometimes even feel like a pro

)...

I will, say, within the next couple of months. But keep in mind that it's really low quality, without subs, and with a fairly large intransparent rectangle displaying the time code in the lower part of the screen...

The rip you do now are quite good I'd say, and you know that

Whoever have worked out the mysteries of trying to correctely inverse-telecine a bad-telecined HK DVD has to be considered a pro in my book
Some technical ravings about this rip, otoh

: I saw other rips from KG who had the same rationale "the source was so bad that....", but I think with such a low resolution you'll have unnecessarily annoying pixellation over whatever video defect may have been there in the first place... but this is not the main problem. The real problem is that with such a small resolution a bitrate of 939 kb/s is totally overkill, I guess you could cut it by half or more: if these people are doing a rip at these poststamp resolutions at least give me a small file!

Well, downsizing reduces the amount of artifacts in the same proportion as it reduces the amount of detail. But if there is not much fine detail to start with, it would affect the artifacts more. Of course, it's better to use specialized filters to deal with the artifacts rather than dumb downsizing.

I totally agree. And that's precisely what I meant by saying that 272x208 was hardly an optimal solution. On the other hand, it's true that this sort of material has very low compressibility (for a given resolution) because it is temporally unclean. I've seen rips from low quality VHS that would keep a high resolution, which would result in a terrible blockiness on top of all the artifacts of the source.
So, the bottom line is, I'll have to be intelligent when encoding Noisy Requiem...
