Director Jean-Marie Straub called Luc Moullet "undoubtedly the only heir to both Buñuel and Tati." A complete film athlete, Luc Moullet, who was born in Paris in 1937, wears several hats with perfect ease: critic (for Cahiers du Cinéma, since 1956), essayist (his most recent work is La Politique des acteurs, Editions Cahiers du Cinéma), actor, producer (notably Marguerite Duras' 1972 film Nathalie Granger), and, of course, director (some two dozen films to date). As director, Moullet has always opted for "absolute" materialism. Working in a hyper-objective vein, he manages to create a comic ambiance in the purest sense of the term. In Anatomie d'un rapport (1975), he and his wife, Antonietta Pizzorno, exhibit the "rich hours" of an intellectual couple's sexuality and turn it into a manifesto. In the early eighties, Moullet changed his method: without sacrificing his objectivity, he introduced the technique of repetition, sometimes accompanied by a dead-pan voice over (in the manner of the pseudo-documentary) that intensifies the comedy. The approach was first put to use in Ma première brasse (1981), in which Moullet filmed himself doggedly trying to learn how to swim. Toujours plus contains the unforgettable image of the director struggling to wrap a banana in one of those supermarket plastic bags that are so impossible to open. In Imphy, capitale de la France (1995), Moullet created suspense by sending a hardy filmmaking team out to find a new French capital - a suspense film highly appreciated by festivalgoers at Locarno last year!
"Genese d'un repas" est une mise a plat, un proces verbal, un rapport qui analyse un systeme selon trois axes successifs: economique, politique et social. Le repas, frugal, n'est qu'un pretexte, sa composition symbolise la vaste exploitation du Tiers-monde.
