SYNOPSIS
<table width="600"><tr><td>After being involved in a gas station hold-up during which the attendant is shot and killed, Samba Traoré flees to his native village with a suitcase full of money. There he meets and marries Saratou, and things go quite well until Saratou falls ill in pregnancy and Samba is too frightened of running into the law to take her to the hospital in town.
Filming in almost the same location as Tilai, Samba Traoré sees Ouedraogo create a modern-day African Western which blends quite well with his own style. Thankfully the borrowing of genre is sufficiently subtle to avoid it becoming a self-parody (anyone who's seen some Bollywood remakes of Hollywood classics will know what I mean) and Samba Traoré succeeds in pulling it off with a certain panache.
Cinematically, Ouedraogo isn't really breaking the mould of film-making with his nonchalant style taking control despite the energetic nature of the story. He seems to be more interested in telling a good story rather than dazzling the audience with technique which is by no means a flaw but does give the proceedings a more low-key profile than it really deserves. The cast plays their roles in the naturalistic style that Ouedraogo manipulates so effectively with locals making up most of the cast, though you'd be forgiven from not noticing, given that they all seem to have been born to act. The recurring theme of social change and exclusion is once again to the fore here - like many of Ouedraogo's heroes, Samba is arriving into a set situation and his presence will start tearing at the embedded social fabric.
Though this is probably not Ouedraogo's best film, it is certainly a very interesting effort and is replete with clever observations from Africa's foremost director. Definately worth investigating for those interested in world cinema.
A universal morality tale set in the austerely beautiful plains of the African Sahel region. What starts as a crime story at times resembles an American western in its lean, landscape-shaped style, but at its core are timeless issues brought to life by a master of humanist cinema.
