Alison began her career in animation in 1951 as a tracer and painter on paul Grimault's "The King & Mr Bird" and throughout the fifties worked for many UK studios including Halas & Batchelor, TVC (where she was one of the leading artists on "Yellow Submarine"), Trickfilm and Wayatt-Cattaneo. Her career truly took wing when she made "Cafe Bar" that won the Annecy Grand Prix in 1975 and and "Monsieur Pascal", another Annecy grand Prix winner in 1979. In 1984 C4 commssioned "Silas Marner", a feature length adaption of George Eliot's novel that truly captured the essence of the period. That same year she made "The Angel and the Soldier Boy", and in 1987 she made what many consider to be her masterpiece "The Black Dog". This was a very personal and profound film about a woman's journey through a dream; her own dream Alison once told me, in which a black dog, much like the Egyptian Anubis, takes her on a mysterious journey full of symbolism. This was followed by "Eros & Psyche", her own lyrically beautiful version of the Greek Myth.

"The Black Dog" (1987), "M. Pascal" (1979) y "Café Bar" (1975) son sus cortometrajes más famosos, convirtiéndose en "clásicos" de la animación europea. Alison comenzó en los 50 como escenógrafa en el estudio de Halas & Batchelor, 'cuna' de la animación británica de calidad. Alternando el trabajo para la industria y la publicidad con las películas personales, en 1967 colabora como directora de arte en la TVC para "Yellow Submarine". En 1960 realiza su primera película personal, "Two Faces" (1968), que se desarrolla según el espíritu de sus películas de autor: la llamada al mundo interior, a la poesía.
Sus películas, a pesar de la formación pictórica, y el carácter íntimo y libre de los temas, son objeto de una atención rigurosa al desarrollo de la narración y a la fuerza de los personajes.
Fué Channel Four quien permitió la producción de sus últimas películas "The Black dog", emocionante viaje del propio yo a través del sueño y "Psyche & Eros", que afronta los temas del desarrollo y la igualdad de la mujer. Último cortometraje realizado antes de dedicarse completamente a la producción de series televisivas de animación para niños.
Alison De Vere muere el 16 de enero de 2001, a los 73 años.

Alison De Vere – Mr Pascal + The Black Dog

Animation filmmaker Alison De Vere is an independent British animator best known for her capabilities as a designer. She was born in Pakistan and began her artistic training at the Royal Academy schools. She later entered the field of animation at the lowest level and worked her way up. After working for the British animation studio Halas and Batchelor for five years during the early '50s she was promoted to designer. Soon afterward, she began free-lancing for TV commercials, credits and special effects. In 1968, she was hired on as background supervisor for George Dunning's Yellow Submarine. To assist with the design--for which the film is best known--de Vere collaborated with Heinz Edelman, a German designer. Between 1970 and 1980 she did commercials for Wyatt Cattaneo Productions. At their studios she also made two internationally recognized films, Cafe Bar (1975) and Mr Pascal (1979), the story of an old man who dreams of his youth as he sits beside a crucifix… Both films won awards at the Annecy Film Festival. Through the '80s de Vere continued making films, in 1984 working on an adaptation of Silas Marner, and in 1987, filming The Black Dog, often considered her true masterpiece. Nadie sabe nada de Café Bar (1974)?

Vi "El perro negro" hace siglos en Caloi en su tinta... de hecho creo que tengo una copia olvidada por ahí en un VHS de la prehistoria digital. Es un gran corto animado, muy en la línea temática de animadoras feministas al estilo de Carole Leaf, Suzan Pitt o Johanna Quinn (cada una con sus particulares técnicas). Los bajo presto y sin demora.

Por cierto, de Suzan Pitt se encuentran los siguientes cortos en la mula (todos ellos igual de recomendables):

ALISON DE VERE (1927-2001)
Her career began when she joined Halas and Batchelor in 1951 as a background designer. In 1967 she worked for TVC on Yellow Submarine. She made an animated cameo during the "Eleanor Rigby" scene. Ms. De Vere was nominated for a Best Short Film BAFTA for her 1979 film "Mr. Pascal." The movie won the Gran Prix at the Annecy Festival. Ms. De Vere also directed "The Black Dog," "Two Faces," "Café Bar" and "Psyche and Eros."
She continued to produce animation until the time of her death.
