²ÛÛÛÛ± Henri de la Falaise was an impoverished French nobleman and hero of WW1.
ÛÛÛÛÛ° When silent film star Gloria Swanson was working on a film in France,
²ÛÛÛÛ he served as a translator on the set. They met, got married, and he
ÛÛÛÛ² came back to the US with her. Later they divorced, and he married film
ÜÛÛÛ² star Constance Bennett. To keep him busy, she packed him off to SE Asia
ÛÛÛÛ² to make movies. His intention was to pattern his films after such
²ÛÛÛÛ docudramas as the enormously successful Nanook Of The North, and Grass
ÛÛÛÛ² and Chang. What he came back with was Legong. The plot is flimsy (girl
ÜÛÛÛ² meets boy, boy loves girl's sister, girl commits suicide), the cast
ÛÛÛÛ² were amateurs (none had ever seen a movie, much less ever acted in one),
²ÛÛÛÛ but the result is nothing short of spectacular. Filmed in Bali in 2-
ÛÛÛÛ² strip technicolor (red and green, no yellow, and washed out blues), it
ÜÛÛÛ² is gorgeous to look at, the music is great, and it's an anthropologist's
ÛÛÛÛ² dream, depicting the now lost cultural practices of a bygone era.

ÛÛÛÛ² The original score was default on the DVD, but Milestone Films
²ÛÛÛÛ commissioned a new soundtrack blending an Indonesian Gamelon orchestra
ÛÛÛÛ² with a small western music combo. It's so good that I made it the default
ÜÛÛÛ² audio, with the original score as an alternate.

²ÛÛÛÛ Because of the large amount of female topless nudity, the movie was cut to
ÛÛÛÛ² ribbons by the censors in the US, and it quickly dropped out of sight. Be-
ÜÛÛÛ² cause of violence (cockfighting), it was also censored in Britain. Three
ÛÛÛÛ² different censored versions were needed to splice the movie back into its
²ÛÛÛÛ almost complete original form for its restoration by UCLA.

ÜÛÛÛ² The DVD also came with 2 more complete feature films, included as a 1 CD
ÛÛÛÛ² extra. One is Gods Of Bali, a 1952 documentary covering many of the same
²ÛÛÛÛ cultural aspects of life in Bali as does Legong. The other is another de
ÛÛÛÛ² la Falaise film called Kliou The Killer, about a killer tiger on the
ÜÛÛÛ² loose in French Indo-china. It's the earliest film made in what is today
ÛÛÛÛ² Vietnam. It was also filmed in color, but that version is lost, and this
±ÛÛÛÛ² one is B&W. it was the last silent film released by a major studio, and
°ÛÛÛÛÛ± the last film made in 2-strip technicolor. The first 3-strip technicolor
²ÛÛÛÛ²±°film was released in 1935.

ASCii PROUDLY DONE BY: fumita The film was beautifully filmed in Bali, and has a musical soundtrack with titles (no dialogue). Legong was produced by Bennett Productions, and originally released by Paramount International (outside the US only) due to concerns about brief female nudity in the film. However, later in the 30's the film apparently showed up in various mutilated versions in so-called "grind houses" in New York City under various lurid titles. The UCLA Film and Television Archive restored Legong in 1999, using prints from the US, Canada, and the UK. The Archive plans to restore one other two-strip Techicolor film, Kliou the Killer Whale, also directed by Henri de la Falaise and released by Bennett Productions.
