Death Powder (Shigeru Izumiya, 1986)

Mensaje por Fitzcarraldo » Mié 05 Ene, 2005 21:00

Directed by Shigeru Izumiya
Cast: Shigeru Izumiya, Takichi Inukai, Rikako Murakami, Mari Natsuki, Kiyoshiro Imawano, Tomio Kageyama

The film opens on a shot of two severed heads standing upright on a stone floor. Both are on fire and the flames have already turned the heads into mis-shapen black lumps. Around this grisly scene, in what appears to be some kind of subterranean lair, various streams of boiling water and molten liquids flow in rivers across the stone.

The film cuts to a slow motion sequence showing a man with a rifle moving through the underground corridors before cutting again to a shot of a severed hand being thrown across the floor. The camera then settles on a female figure, complete with mirror goggles and mouthpiece, lying motionless on a wire bedframe.

Cut to a young woman running down a neon lit street. Behind her, seemingly in pursuit, is a young man dressed in black. Meanwhile, from inside a black car a man wearing a mask to cover his mouth watches the man and woman as they chase each other. Some of the pedestrians that the two people pass have their faces pixellated out so that we can't see them.

Elsewhere, in the room where the strange humanoid is lying motionless on the bed frame, the older guard we saw earlier is destroying the ceiling - as though he has taken complete leave of his senses.

Reaching something of a dead end the young man and woman confront each other, although we soon realise that they are actually friends. The driver of the black car eventually moves away after passing on a message to the other man, leaving the young girl to quietly argue with her colleague - scolding him for always trying to be the hotshot.

Back at the lair the guard, called Harima (played by Director Izumiya) seems to be slowly going crazy and continues to prod and pull down chunks of ceiling in the room. The odd female figure continues to lie completely still on the bed.

Now in their car the young man, who we know as Kiyoshi, is talking to the girl. However, the latter, now wearing an earpiece, is complaining that the signal she is getting from (presumably Harima) is not good. Kiyoshi jokes that Harima is probably fucking the captive but the girl informs Kiyoshi that that would be a big mistake and jeopardise all their hard work.

Returning to the lair they venture inside, now fearing the worst as the signal has been lost completely. Kiyoshi eventually gets to the room with the strange figure and walks over to her/it and says hello. The figure sits up and sprays Kiyoshi with a thick white powder before lying back down again. Kiyoshi stumbles away just as Harima catches him. A brawl ensues with Harima gaining the upper hand, easily overpowering Kiyoshi who is starting to wilt from the spray of Death Powder.

Entering the room the young girl points her weapon at Harima but the latter hacks off one of Kiyoshi's hands and we cut to a shot of his severed hand being thrown away (as used at the beginning of the film). Fearing for Kiyoshi's life the girl puts her gun down. However, Kiyoshi's head has started to swell up in reaction to the powder and he crashes down to the floor in one of the corners of the room. As he does so the humanoid figure (which we later discover is some new type of android) starts to disintegrate.

What then follows is a series of hallucinations and meanderings on the meaning of life and death. Kiyoshi, with his head swelling up like a badly scarred balloon, utters "Heaven exists within my body. Dead. But hell, hell is everywhere." And, as if in symbolic response to this, one of his hallucinations shows the strange 'Scar People' one of whom is the intriguingly titled Mr Hacker. Hacker, tied down in his wheelchair, sports a nifty line in facial fetishwear and this leather mask gives his scarred face a further air of menace. Constantly pleading with two scar people in uniform who are standing at either side of him, Hacker seemingly spends his time shouting, struggling and screaming.

Kiyoshi enters the room with the scar people and punches Mr Hacker causing his face to explode and the other guards are quickly shot. After this the film cuts to the sequence with the burning heads, seen right at the beginning.

Eventually we return to Kiyoshi who has now started to transform into a massive, shapeless monster. As this transformation occurs a group of men arrive outside the gangs lair and attempt to deliver a shipment. With no answer at the address the messenger calls his contact and is told to just go inside. The group of men open the door and walk in, from outside we see the door transformed into a slab of mutant flesh and a huge eye stares back from the doorway. With the screams of the delivery group ringing out, the film ends on a series of close-ups of the Kiyoshi mutation.
