Griffith and starring Blanche Sweet. A print of the film survives. It was filmed in the San Fernando desert and was the "most ambitious film made by Griffith during the California trip of 1911" before the Biograph Company moved back to New York.

Estas cuatro tramas son enlazadas por la imagen de una mujer que mece una cuna. A medida que las historias van llegando a su clímax, Griffith hace más rápido el montaje alternado, con secuencias cada vez más cortas, y creando una tensión hacia el desenlace de las cuatro historias. Pero William desea escapar del pueblecito para ensanchar sus horizontes y debe realizar unos estudios que requieren una cantidad de dinero que él no posee. A escondidas, Sussie vende su vaca para obtener el dinero necesario para costear los estudios de William en la ciudad. A su regreso, William se ha convertido en un pastor protestante pero es seducido por una ex-actriz convertida en costurera, Bettina Hopkins. William se casará con Bettina ignorando que Sussie, quien se mantiene en el anonimato, había sido su protectora.

La historia se sitúa en el siglo XIX francés antes y durante la revolución francesa. Louise nació de la unión de una aristócrata con un plebeyo, y fue abandonada a las puertas de la catedral de Notre Dame de París. Allí le recogió el padre de Henriette, un buen hombre de condición humilde, que la crió como si fuera su propia hija. Pasado el tiempo, Louise y Henriette son unas lindas señoritas que se quieren como hermanas, y los padres de la segunda han muerto. Ante la ceguera que padece Louise, ambas hermanas viajan a París, con la esperanza de que un doctor pueda curarla. Allí las desgracias se suceden. Un aristócrata pervertido rapta a Henriette, mientras que una mezquina anciana quiere aprovecharse de Louise para recabar limosna. A todo esto la revolución estalla, y cobran protagonismo Danton y Robespierre. El primero es pintado como un humanista que busca el bien de Francia, el otro como un hombre resentido para el que el fin justifica los medios.

La vida del presidente Abraham Lincoln a través de los hechos más significativos que tuvieron lugar durante su mandato: la cabaña donde se crió, los debates con Douglas, su anécdota con el General Grant, sus amores y su matrimonio con Mary Todd. No tuvo suerte el maestro David W. Griffith con el cine sonoro. A su biopic sobre el presidente Abraham Lincoln le falta fuerza y le sobra un cierto aire teatral, como de cuadros encadenados sin demasiada fortuna. El film arranca con el nacimiento del futuro presidente, y concluye con su asesinato durante una representación teatral y el monumento que le honra en Washington. En algunas imágenes de los ejércitos durante la guerra de secesión brilla el poderío visual del cineasta. Y Walter Huston apunta maneras presidenciales.
