Storyline

A Canadian World War II veteran working for the British Foreign Office scours England for the killer who murdered his wife.

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Teeny-tiny Hammer pictures built its reputation on second-feature melodramas before graduating to gore-encrusted horror epics. Cloudburst is a low-key thriller starring American actor Robert Preston, whose casting assured a certain degree of business in the States. Preston plays a code expert, resettled in England after the war and working at the British Foreign Office.

Preston and Sellars, both working for British intelligence during WW II, marry and plan for a happy life in London. Their plans, however, are shattered when a hit-and-run car kills Sellars. His world shattered, Preston becomes unhinged and sets out to get back at the driver and passengers of the car that destroyed his beloved. Utilizing techniques he perfected in cryptography and commando units in the army, Preston methodically begins to murder the guilty people. Scotland Yard Inspector Tapley comes on the case and traps Preston by breaking the code of the cryptographic clues he has left at the killing scenes. This well-written, disturbing story analyzes the power to kill that dwells in everyone. Prestons normal, likable demeanor contrasts nicely with the obsessive behavior of his character, and Tapley is wonderfully clever as the detective.
