Hello everyone

Egoli is Karen Kelly's memorial to the suffering of the black South African mineworkers during the dark days of apartheid. The animation is told allegorically, but it's meaning is clear - "There is nothing that one man will not do to another." as Carolyn Forché once wrote in her poem 'The Visitor'. The mineworkers, represented by roosters are preyed upon by white dogs who rip them to shreds and who in turn fall upon themselves, destroying each other in the fury of capitalist greed that overcomes their sensibilities. The cities rush to fill the land and the mineworkers shelter within them, prisoners in their own country. It's a terrible tale, but it holds the hope of overcoming the political division of South Africa in those years. The entire animation is painted in a joyously expressive and expressionist style, somewhat reminiscent of Georges Roualt in the use of dark outlines and bold colour fills - slabs of oil paint brushed quickly across the surface. As the animation progresses, the imagery becomes wilder and less controlled, boiling away in a cauldron of excited colours.

No dialogue

After the animation is a short interview with the animator, this is in English. At the beginning she talks about a miner's strike; she is referring to a strike amongst UK miners against the right wing government we had who wanted to close all the mines (they did eventually; right wing governments are all fascists at heart). By helping the UK miners the animator became aware of the struggle for survival amongst the South African mineworkers and so created this animation to raise awareness of their plight.
