Mozart's masterpiece of music and comedy has been brought to colorful life by the animation team of Giulio Gianini & Emanule Luzzati. The meeting between Genoa born Emanuele Luzzati and the Roman, Giulio Gianini is legendary. One is a renowned illustrator, ceramist and theatrical set designer, the other is a director of photography and documentary maker. Shortly after being introduced by a mutual friend they started working together. This was at the end of the 1950s and Luzzati & Gianini's animation saw the light of day with (The Paladins of France). Their roles are clearly shared, Luzzati makes the sets and characters and Gianini directs the animation. They choose their subjects together, drawn from the "commedia dell’arte", fables and musical comedy. In 1964, they made (The Flying Magpie), which is based on the overture from Rossini’s work. The film is a stunning fresco of rhythms and colours that is filmed around the idea of a magpie that is leading a bird rebellion. The cut-outs complement the textures of Luzzati's colours and Gianini's mastery of animation produces some moments of great filmmaking. The eleven minutes of this visual emotion leaves the spectator astounded... After Italian in Algeria, which is also inspired by Rossini's work, came Pulcinella, based on the overture Il Turco in Italia. The last part of the Rossini trilogy, the film features one of the best known and loved characters from the "commedia dell’arte" who is troubled by his real and imaginary nightmares. The animation and Gianini's paper figures are majestic in this film.
Luzzati's experience as theatrical set designer brought about an inspiring project for the duo: the animated version of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Forty years after Papageno by Lotte Reiniger, the two Italian filmmakers brought this extraordinary fresco from Mozart's work to life. Sequences of rare beauty – in which music finds its visual match with art – make this featurette one of the most appreciated of all the film versions of the work. The artistic collaboration of Luzzati & Gianini has given the world of animation some timeless masterpieces, confirming the enormous potential of this art.
The story of Pamina and Tamino is told as a fairy tale through musical highlights, arias and duets, sung in German by prominent singers, an italian narrator opens and close the opera.
High Quality satrip of the restored 45’ version!!!
