Ryan Larkin, Animador del NFB of Canada
Ryan Larkin (born July 31, 1943 in Montreal) is a Canadian animator, who rose to fame with the psychedelic 1969 Oscar-nominated short (Walking) and successive follow up, Street Musique (1972). He contributed art work and animation effects to the feature film Running Time (1974), directed by Mort Ransen, in which Ryan also played three bit parts. Prior to "Walking", he made two other short animated films, "Cityscape" and "Syrinx", and worked on various public works projects developed at the National Film Board of Canada. His own films won many international awards including an Oscar nomination in 1967.
He attended the Art School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Museum of Fine Art) before working at the National Film Board of Canada from the early 1960s until 1978.
In recent years he's been plagued by a downward spiral of drug abuse, alcoholism and homelessness, but recently found himself back in the limelight when a 14-minute computer animated documentary on his life, Ryan by fellow Canadian animator Chris Landreth, won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Animated Short and screened to acclaim at film festivals around the world.
"Alter Egos" (2004), directed by Lawrence Greene, is a documentary about the making of "Ryan" that includes interviews with both Ryan Larkin and Chris Landreth as well as with various people who knew Ryan at the peak of his own success.Ryan Larkin is currently working with composer Laurie Gordon of the band Chiwawa on his first animation film in decades entitled Spare Change.

Syrinx (Ryan Larkin, 1965)
She was the nymph who found refuge in the river reeds when the goat-god Pan pursued her. Syrinx is the first film of Ryan Larkin, a young artist from Norman McLaren's student group. To illustrate the ancient Greek legend of how Pan made his pipes, he employs various charcoal sketches. Accompanying music is Claude Debussy's Syrinx for solo flute.

Walking (Ryan Larkin, 1968)
An artist's observation of the way people walk. Ryan Larkin (Syrinx, Cityscape) employs a variety of techniques--line drawing, color wash, etc.--to catch and reproduce the motion of people afoot. The springing gait of youth, the mincing step of the high-heeled female, the doddering amble of the elderly--all are registered with humor and individuality, to the accompaniment of special sound. Film without words.

Street Musique (Ryan Larkin, 1972)
Visual improvisation on music performed by a popular group presented as sidewalk entertainers. The illustration is by a young film artist and animator who sees life with an amused and imaginative eye. His take-off point is the music, but his own beat is more boisterous than the musicians. He ranges from the most convoluted of abstractions to caricature of familiar rituals, including the bath. A film without words.
