Interesting Info: From 1943 to 1945 Warner's produced 26 "Private Snafu" cartoons.
They were used as part of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine, a film series shown at military bases
around the world. Each cartoon is approximately three minutes long and in black-and-white. The cartoons
utilized all of Warner's cartoon directors and voice artists and Carl Staling's music.
Private Snafu is the worst solider in the army, the one who does everything wrong, even with the help of
his magical friend Technical Fairy First Class. The films illustrate in a humorous way what not to do to stay
alive in the Armed Forces. Many of the films were written by Theodore Geisel (Dr. Suess), and Phil Eastman.
Although the Pentagon had to approve the storyboards, Chuck Jones recalls that he and the other directors
were given a great deal of latitude in the way they handled the material and were allowed to add comic business.
As the Snafu series were intended for an audience of GI's, the gags included lots of cheesecake shots, sexual
innuendo, bare posteriors and a occasional "damn or hell."
Warner Bros. started doing the Private Snafu series first, then Snafu was spread out to other studios.
After the war the various studios destroyed thousands of feet of animation, leaving only a few Private Snafu's
to remain in circulation.
