Capturas:Georges Schwizgbel's LA JEUNE FILLE ET LES NUAGES, an original modern adaptation of Cinderella, is remarkable from at least two aspects. Firstly, there are the title of the film and emphasis on dream-like elements: Schwizgebel moves Cinderella from subjects with a socio-archetypal background, where it no doubt has its place, to the so-called literature for women; secondly (given the generally known motifs, such as pigeons as Cinderella's helpers, her gown or the slipper lost on the stairs) the author squeezes unbelievably and with a great deal of dynamism the story into barely five minutes. He tells it brilliantly, without damaging the chosen atmosphere, i.e. a dream-like atmosphere, by some unsuitable external factor. The dream is the governing principle from the very first image, where pigeons fly around the sleeping girl, until the last one, when Cinderella, carried off by her prince in an aeroplane, simply and quite naturally takes off the slippers her half-sisters could not put on. A quite unique punctuation resource are the rapidly flowing clouds, which in combination with Schwizgebel's constantly moving camera, views into the interior and dynamic bird's views facilitate a free interchange of space and time (the day passes dynamically into the night and vice versa). Endless movement, projected in numerous metamorphoses, has substantially affected animation even in such elementary matters as the change of costumes (the fascinating movement, with which Cinderella "changes" her dress), the transformation of "geometrical" solutions and the utilisation of colours that follow not only the laws of art, but also of music, as though it were more a matter of chords than of accents. The dance, which of old has always fascinated the author (see e.g. his older film 78 REVOLUTIONS) has at one time, when used as a free quotation of Schwizgebel's first film, a stroboscopic effect (cf. older texts about Schwizgebel in ASIFA News).
