Opening remarks for the film:
The Young Rajah has long been considered a lost film. This presentation is meant to recreate the flavor of this wonderful, now fragmentary Paramount feature from 1922.
It is not a film restoration, but a digital compilation using an incomplete 16mm print from a private collection, elements from two promotional trailers, production stills and newly created photographic inserts.
Newly created explanatory titles based on Paramount editing continuity bridge gaps in the story, and Spanish language flash titles in the surviving print fragment were replaced with the original title text. The imperfect image quality reflects the hard times that the print has known. Nonetheless, Valentino’s performance in this unusual story shines through.
The producers sincerely hope that a complete version of The Young Rajah might yet be discovered.
