Cheng the fruit seller is in love with the daughter of his neighbor the doctor, but the good doctor won't let him marry her unless Chang finds him more patients. With some creative carpentering, Chang sets about augmenting the doctor's income.

1st Chinese short in early Chinese film industry.

This one of the earliest film made in China in the early era of Chinese film industry is also one of the earliest box office success. Although classified as comedy/short/romance, there really was not much true romance and comedy simply due to the short duration of the film.



Note: You know "Ding Jun shan" is the first chinese film, but unfortunately, it can't be found today, and furthermore, nearly 200 films and shorts made between 1908-1922, were all lost in the war, only this one was survivied, it's the oldest chinese film you can see in the world.

This is a very rare copy from the original in China Film Archive, not for circulation or purchase. English intertitled already.

Actually not all early chinese films from 30s are alike the allegoric emotional "Spring in a small town", most of them portrays the real life of common people, are very realism movies. "Spring in a small town" is definitely an alternative one, it's a unique film in chinese cinema.

I know, I'm quite familiar with Chinese literature from the 30's, so I expected movies to follow a similar trend of social themes; thus, Spring in a small town was a delightful surprise. On the other hand, I think the best short stories and novels of the epoch are those that have a component of beauty and emotional power behind the obvious social criticism, such as those by Lu Xun (like Diary of a mad man or The true story of Ah Q), Ba Jin (I love The family), or things like The Lin family shop by Mao Dun (you said you'd release an adaptation of his Spring silkworms, didn't you?); so, in some sense, the sensibility of Fei Mu's film isn't completely strange to that of his best contemporary writers. But it's easy to see why it has been hailed as a landmark in Chinese cinema of its time.

Yes, I'll get my hand of "Spring silkworms". I think this is one of the best movie adaptated from Lu Xun's book.

other films i think they're no any subtitles existing, that's the biggest problem. you know Lu Xun is a great writer, so you need understand the dialgue then you can really understand his films. but I can't do every subtitles for all his films.
