The first grand historical epic of producer/director Cecil B. DeMille, Joan The Woman features a stellar performance by opera diva Geraldine Farrar as Joan of Arc: "The Girl Patriot Who Fought with Men, Was Loved by Men and Killed by Men, Yet Retained the Heart of a Woman" (according to the film's preamble).
Made at a time when the outcome of World War I, raging on French soil, was far from certain -- the film is a grand-scale tribute to the indomitable spirit of the people of France. Since the U.S. had yet to enter the fray, DeMille assembled legions of armored soldiers and horses and waged his own battle in the name of freedom (and spectacular entertainment).

Joan the Woman, 1917 was DeMille's first historic spectacle. Although not the first of its kind, it was certainly a groundbreaker and turning point for DeMille. With this film, he proved that he could stand equal to such great directors as D.W. Griffith by creating a film that would go beyond the expectations and limitations of the time and be an example to other directors. DeMille proved that he was an innovator in his use of panoramic war scenes, double exposures, etc. This film certainly wetted DeMille's taste for working on a grand scale.
