An interesting indie doc from Israel! A funny political meditation upon sex, identity, society.
When the second Intifada began, Israel closed its borders to workers from Palestinian-occupied territories. This policy tore a hole in the job market, so the Israeli authorities encouraged workers from other parts of the world to emigrate to Israel to fill the new vacancies. Among those who answered the call were Philippine transsexuals. They work, often round the clock, looking after elderly orthodox Jewish men, who come to look on them as substitute children. One evening a week they have a night off, when they are free to live out their personal dreams, appearing as drag queens in Tel Aviv before an audience of Filipinos migrant workers across Israel on their drag-queen show. “Paper Dolls”, their ensemble, and the troupe’s members enjoy Israel’s liberal atmosphere, but they remain outsiders and are always treated as such. But in spite of the chaotic Israeli reality, where fear of terrorist suicide bombers competes with the fear of the "Immigration Police", the group members succeed in expressing their true selves. They see Israel as an open and free place, where they can enjoy sexual and cultural liberty.
