Amazon.com review
British filmmaker Michael Wood embarks on an idiosyncratic journey of 20,000 miles tracing the expedition of Alexander the Great in this captivating documentary. Relying on the words of Greek and Roman historians, Wood sought to follow Alexander's route of world conquest as closely as possible, and it is simply amazing how much folklore about the great general he is able to pick up on the way. Beginning in Greece and proceeding through 16 countries, including Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, and India, Wood listens intently to local storytellers who are still passing down the legends of Alexander. In one fascinating segment, Wood is barred from entering Iraq, but he is able to view the terrain on which Alexander's troops faced the Persians by scanning the radar screens of an American AWACS plane patrolling high above. In the course of his travels, Wood passes through four war zones and he notes that strategic regions of Alexander's day are still "on the fault lines of history." This is a lengthy production, clocking in at almost four hours, but the relaxed pace is a virtue, as Woods and the people he meets along the way, from local storytellers to noted historians, pass along an amazing array of historical knowledge. Lovers of history will find this documentary to be a joy and may well find themselves savoring every mile of Alexander's great journey. --Robert J. McNamara
a few words from the author: Hello, my name is Michael Wood. Ever since I started in television, I have wanted to tell the story of Alexander the Great. Every conceivable template of human destiny is put on this man. I never quite cracked the split in his personality.
He was chivalrous, even generous, to his enemies. He was vindictive, and he killed thousands, maybe millions. In a drunken argument, he even killed a friend who had saved his life years before.
Walking in his footsteps, I drew Alexander the Great's portrait from written history and local tales. I saw an extraordinarily gifted man who could lead his men through the toughest of circumstances. I also saw a man who let no resistance go unpunished.
Throughout our trip we saw Alexander's legacy. On one level, Alexander brought death to the people of Asia. On the banks of the Ganges, Indian historian A.K. Narain told me that following Alexander was 'going in the footsteps of violence.'
On another level, Alexander's crusade unleashed tremendous social and cultural energy. After Alexander, Greek culture flourished in east Asia and India. Three great world religions rose in the Hellenistic culture of the Near East. Alexander's legend appeared in art and story all over the ancient world.
In Taxila, Pakistani archaeologist Ahmed Dani said of the merging of Greek culture on the Indian subcontinent, 'There was destruction and loss of life, to be sure, but great things occurred which advanced the history of humanity.'
Our eye-witnesses along the journey helped us bring Alexander the Great's story to life. It is a story that exists forever in the telling.
