Quatermass (1953-2005) (mini-series)

To many brought up in England in the fifties and sixties, the name 'Quatermass' is synonymous with science fiction at its most compelling. Written by Isle of Man writer Nigel Kneale as the BBC TV plays, 'The Quatermass Experiment', 'Quatermass II' and 'Quatermass and the Pit' thrilled British TV's earliest viewers when screened in six separate episodes in 1953, 1955 and 1957 respectively. In the third series, respected English actor Andre Morell breathed life into the role of the British government rocket scientist with an interest in things other than rocket science. Though in retrospect the acting appeared often amateurish, even given the 'live' nature of BBC plays then, the impact even now is dramatic, perhaps in part because of the simplistic representations of life which the developing TV genre portrayed.

The transition of Quatermass from the small screen to the cinema was brought about by the success of the TV miniseries from a collaboration between the BBC, Kneale and Hammer Films Ltd. This was to be Hammers first horror movie production, and were to make a total of three Quatermass movies, the first two made at their UK studios at Bray and the last at MGM Studios Borehamwood. The first, 'The Quatermass Experiment', included the pop-horror movie themes of the day; space travel and alien monsters. The enthusiastic direction of British director Val Guest together with some fine acting produced a movie which even now still captures the imagination. In a move typical of the British film industry at that time, an American actor was contracted to play the title role, in order to provide universal box office bankability both in europe and the United States. In this movie, veteran actor Brian Donlevy, then in the latter years of his holywood career, portrayed Quatermass as a gruff, slightly menacing and thoughtless character, who worked his scientists beyond endurance. This truly must have been one of the first big screen 'anti-heroes', since there appears to be few redeeming qualities in his character, in complete contrast to the portrayal of Quatermass in the original BBC TV series.

The success of Hammer's first foray into the horror genre meant that a sequel to 'The Quatermass Experiment' was inevitable, and the following year 'Quatermass II' was released. Though very much still in the cast of 50's British science fiction, this appeared to be a less successful screen adaptation, and it was a further six years before the final Quatermass in the trilogy was presented to the public, in the form of 'Quatermass and the Pit'. By this time, the British public appetite for science fiction was considerable, not least fuelled by the immense popularity of the 'Dr. Who' television series and his Dalek adversaries.

In 1979, British Independant Television produced a dissapointingly lacklustre Quatermass series which pointedly lacked the punch of the previous television and movie offerings.

Kneale returned to Quatermass again in the 90's with a series for BBC's Radio 4, 'The Quatermass Memoirs'. In this five-part drama-documentary mixing interview, archive and adventure, `Quatermass' creator Nigel Kneale reflects on the fearful 50s atmosphere by which he was inspired, and creates a further adventure for one of science's great fictional characters, Professor Bernard Quatermass. Andrew Keir returns to the role of Quatermass, with Emma Gregory as Mandy and Zulema Dene as Maire.

Finally, in 2005, the BBC returned to the original scripts for the first story, 'Quatermass Experiment'. This was a slightly revised and updated version which was performed live for BBC4.

En vez de buscar superhéroes, y dado que la unión hace la fuerza, ¿por qué no nos coordinamos un poco y entre todos traducimos los subs?, cada episodio son unas 300 líneas, a un par de episodios por cabeza podríamos hacerlos todos, siempre que todos los seguidores de la serie, que parece que somos muchos, nos impliquemos.

Pues Jozete, yo la serie no la conozco, más bien las tres pelis que hizo la Hammer sobre el Dr Quatermass. Yo les tengo un cariño especial, sobre todo a la tercera entrega "¿Qué sucedió entonces?", pues consiguió desembotarme un poco del cine de qualité y abrirme a otras cosas, aluciné conmigo mismo al descubrir que unos insectos (claramente de cartón piedra o algo por el estilo) me hicieron volver a mirar con los ojos ingenuos de niño cinéfilo que casi había perdido.

Pues como decía, de la serie no sé nada, pero me imagino casos sobrenaturales resueltos por Quatermass, y seguro que no están nada mal.
Por cierto, una preguntilla ¿sabeis si los capítulos "se siguen" o son independientes?

EPISODE ONE: "CONTACT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED"
A rocket sent 1,500 miles above the Earth to make certain observations has a defect in its control systems and veers of course, its designer Professor Quatermass losing contact with it for some time. It crashes back to Earth in Wimbledon, and Quatermass rushes to the scene with his team from the British Experimental Rocket Group. The experts wait as the rocket cools for the three man crew inside to emerge.

The capsule opens and only one astronaut, Victor Carroon, emerges and collapses. Of the two other men, Greene and Reichenheim, there is no sign. Scotland Yard's Chief Inspector Lomax starts an investigation into the men's disappearance, and fingerprints Carroon. This and Carroon's knowledge of German indicate he has the memory and identity of the whole three man crew.

Victor is the target of a kidnap attempt, but kills one of his attackers.

Carroon had been acting very strangely towards a cactus before the kidnap, and Judith claims his arm had changed. Carroon escapes the kidnappers and goes into hiding in London as Lomax mounts a search for him. A young boy helps him hide in a cinema, and then Carroon makes for a chemists.

Carroon's hand has fused with the cactus and mutated, and at the chemists he consumes substances that would kill a normal man. The search for Carroon continues, but it is a television transmission from Westminster Abbey which finds what Carroon has become.

The huge, pulsating mass in Poet's Corner has been revealed on television. Briscoe says that it is about to give off spores, which will end all life on Earth. The army try to destroy the creature without success, and it is left up to Quatermass to solve the problem.

No he tenido la suerte de ver la serie original de la BBC, pero el argumento es el mismo de las 3 películas de la Hammer. Como dice Takeshi, la serie de TV es el típico serial, es decir, te cortan cada capítulo creando un suspense y animándote a ver el siguiente.

PD: Siento no poder ayudar en la traducción. Ni mis conocimientos del inglés ni mi escaso tiempo libre me lo permiten.
PD2: Si alguien pretende seguir la historia de "The Quatermass experiment" gracias a los PDF, que sepa que son fotocopias (de fotocopias de fotocopias) de los scripts originales, con malísima calidad (y con el texto subrayado), y algunas páginas son imposibles de descifrar. Una pena.

No puedo entrar allí, pero por lo que me dices lo voy captando. Debo entender entonces que cada temporada es una extensión de la historia y acontecimientos de cada una de las tres pelis originales?
