PLOT SUMMARY :
In a deadpan riff on navel-gazing French sex dramas, director Moullet plays himself in a docudrama set largely in bed. An actress stands in (or lies in, as the case may be) for real-life partner and co-director Pizzorno, to reenact the couplings and quarrels of a pair of prickly intellectuals. Domination and female satisfaction are the opposing issues, not least of all when Pizzorno storms into the frame to deliver a piece of her mind.
ABOUT THE FILM :
Anatomy of a Relationship (1975) was co-directed with Moullet's wife Antonietta Pizzorno. With Moullet as himself and Christine Hébert as an obvious Pizzorno stand-in, Anatomy dissects in painful detail the sexual dysfunction in its makers' marriage. Hébert demands clitoral orgasms, and Moullet lamely parries, "It's just a matter of an inch or so - it's all part of the same system." Calling himself "the first victim" of the sexual revolution, Moullet paradoxically comes off the better of the two, or at least the more willing to bear the ugliest parts of himself; even a joke sequence observing that sewer holes are perfectly sized to swallow up film canisters betrays a trace of vaginal horror. After an abrupt false ending, Pizzorno appears for a three-way postmortem in which she laments not playing herself, a self-reflexive U-turn that only underscores the movie's mood of failure. Appropriately for a film so concerned with castration anxiety, both versions end with a woman saying, "Cut."

Anatomy of a Relationship is a logical sequel to Billy le Kid: another film that focuses on a male-female relationship and explores the closeness of love and violence.
“The problem is, the only way you can see to make love is to rape,” the hero’s lover tells him. In its way, the film is Moullet’s equivalent to Jean Eustache’s La maman et la putain|The Mother and the Whore. (Eustache edited Billy le Kid, and Moullet produced Eustache’s 1970 Le cochon. Moullet plays himself in Anatomie d’un rapport, which deals with his relationship with his partner, co-director Antonietta Pizzorno. This is a frank, confessional film, but one in which the confessional quality is always distanced. It is a kind of documentary, as much of the culture of its period as of the lives of the two characters: he wants to have a child; she doesn’t; she demands clitoral orgasms, he laments the disappearance of the “complementarity of the sexual relation” and perceives that he has arrived on the historical stage too late. The masterstroke of this extraordinary film is the ending, in which the real Pizzorno, whose role has been taken by an actress, Christine Hébert, discusses the film with Moullet. Yet even here the fictional distance that has been present all through the film continues, as Pizzorno is replaced by Hébert again.
