Giuseppe M. Gaudino - Giro di lune tra terra e mare (1997)

This post is dedicated to my friend 3p!

This is the best Italian film of recent years: an extraordinary mix of experimental cinema and feature film, a great masterpiece from one of greatest contemporary Italian experimental -and unknown- directors, Giuseppe M. Gaudino, an ambitious, intelligent artist.
The film describes the history of Pozzuoli, an ancient town built in the shadow of a volcano overlooking a bay near Naples. The period is from 538 BC to 1984, but between the different times, no direct line is drawn. The most antique pictures are about Nero's murder of his mother Agrippina, the oracles of the Sibilla Cumana, the worrying presence of the young martyr Artema and the roamings of Maria la Pazza, the heroine who shall save the city. In the early seventies of the 20th century, the country round the bay is influenced by the rise and fall of the land. It marks a break in the relationship between people and their earth. The Gioia, a family of fishermen, are forced to leave their homes by the slow earth movement. They have to rethink their life. The ambitious Giro di lune tra terra e mare is very intelligent in its structure. The viewer gets to see a geographical area of Italy that is inculcated with an age-old tradition. The film even has to be subtitled in Italy, because of the much Neapolitan and Latin spoken. In his first feature, director Gaudino's obvious affection for his native city doesn't prevent him from underlining its physical and moral decline. Combining experimental dissolves and overlays with dramatic narrative, he alternates stylized re-enactments of the Roman Empire's decline with the neo-realistic tale of the contemporary family, suggesting a temporal co-existence throughout the city's historical ages. Taking his cue from the film's highly original screenplay, cinematographer Ben Abdallah's camerwork is eclectic, incorporating grainy swishpans, varying filmstocks and camera speeds with a stark set design. Ben Abdallah and producer Isabella Sandri are two of many holdovers from Gaudino's previous film work, including the performance group Epsilon Indi, whose score evokes a haunting quality that conjures up Pozzuoli's ghosts.
Gaudino evokes the past by scratching images and manipulating their speed, which works to alienate but is also very natural. A true tour de force that works very effectively, an amalgam of directors from Luchino Visconti to Stan Brakhage.
