Comentarios y semi-sinopsis:

Como es habitual, un par ( uno bueno y otro malo ) de comentarios ( en inglés ) del CIRCO, en el que en apariencia ha causado buena impresión:Lucile Hadzihalilovic has been among the most hotly tipped talents in French cinema over the last few years following her close association with Gaspar Noé? (she co-edited his Seul contre tous, he shot her medium-length The Eyes of Jean-Pierre). But shelve all preconceptions: her long-awaited debut feature Innocence is unlike anything you may be expecting. Haunting, boldly original and altogether uncanny, Innocence, based on a story by Frank Wedekind, is set in a girls' school situated deep in a forest, where new pupils arrive in boxes and are raised in a strict but benign old-world atmosphere. The girls live in small groups, each age allotted a different coloured hair ribbon, but the sweetly idyllic atmosphere has a sinister undertow. What happens in the main building, where the older girls go at night, and where do the mysterious subterranean tunnels lead? Innocence creates an eerie self-enclosed world, where fetishistic images of childhood and femininity are pushed to their limits. Hadzihalilovic's vision has echoes of artists such as Bellmer and Balthus, and film-makers Bu±uel and Borowczyk, but from a female Gothic perspective that gives the film an edge that Angela Carter surely would have relished. A very young ensemble cast give a miraculous collective performance. It's a long, long way from Malory Towers.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, prepared me for this load of pretentious tosh. From the excessively long opening credits to the return at the end to an underwater state.. one long, tedious, boring study. You can waffle on as much as you like about light, direction, lingering shots. It still doesn't hide the fact that this film is a load of tripe. Probably ideal for discussing over a cappuccino, but for gods sake don't waste your time watching it. I felt that i had been put seriously through the mill with this film.... a visual equivalent of a strong dose of tranquilizers. Put all the metaphors aside, and looking for deep meanings... i ended yup looking for a plot! This quite simply has to be one of the most dire films in existence...

Innocence is an extraordinary film that explores its theme with such determined rigor one cannot help but be compelled and shocked by every moment. Innocence explores the period in girls' lives before they lose their Innocence and start adulthood. The mysterious school to which we are introduced through Tarkovskyesque images of flowing water becomes a dark and at times haunting manifestation of both the young girls' enforced Innocence as well as the setting for the film's mystery narrative in which we find ourselves desperate to see through the schools wooded grounds to some kind of epiphany.
Part of the success of Innocence is that it is able to confuse the viewer and forces the audience to confront their own ideas of Innocence and how we as adults should view images of Innocence. Images of the young girls at play should be easier to watch but this is an adult film with a predominately adult audience and the darkness of the films own geography plays with ones ideas of Innocence and the loss of it.
Extraordinary images, extraordinary performances, a great film.
