Here are six more experimental shorts by Vladimir Kobrin. I would particularly recommend Paradoxical Man 2 and Grey Times. The first one presents an absurdist vision of the Soviet geopolitical ambitions (with a soundtrack featuring snippets of maniacal monologues by actual mental patients). The latter one is an intensely lyrical contemplation of the dehumanizing impact of the Soviet rule as well as the other historical atrocities of the past century. As to the remaining shorts, the computer graphics will certainly look very dated (and it was dated already at the time of creation), but the way it is manipulated is often quite imaginative. No subs, sorry... Also, the only sensible biographical presentation about Kobrin I could find online is in French -- oh well, I guess it will give you a chance to exercise your language skills:

They are being released at the Russian forum fonarik.tv (and, as far as I understand, the material is supplied by the actual Kobrin's collaborators). I'll try to distribute the remaining disks on eMule as they come out. I think that the artistic integrity of Kobrin's movies varies a lot, but some of them are quite remarkable. From the discussions on the Russian forums, it seems that English subtitles may become available one day...

Oh, the Terayama's cap is just a shot from Throw Away Your Books. You may remember that, after the protagonist is seduced by an older woman, he has a vision of being launched to the sky in a primitive airplane, and then you see the woman taking off her fox mask and telling the baby "Daddy has flied off!".

Matusmoto's cap is form the ATG preview for the Funeral Parade of Roses (I don't think it actually appears in the movie). I like this shot very much. It is distributed over the preview in very short sequences (just a few frames each). You see a naked boy playing flute coming from the left, Oedipus-Peter running towards the screen (along the stretch of power poles) and this mysterious man dressed in black staring at you from behind his sun-glasses (I actually suspect it may be Matsumoto himself, I am not sure). So, I just picked one frame from that sequence, right at the moment when the composition comes to climax. The way I see it, it's quite expressive even as a still photo...

I don't think so. But I can rip it for you, if you want to have a look. I think it's quite remarkable, as most things Matusmoto did...

Hey, fitz, I am very glad these shorts are to your liking. I am not completely sure, but I have the impression that there are no commercial DVDs as of now. There are apparently 5 discs which are being circulated in the Moscow art milieu by the former Kobrin's collaborators. The guy from fonarik.tv actually promised to rip all the 5 DVDs. Apparently, he is getting the material from Nicolai Shirokij, who is featured in the 3rd reality shorts, for example. I've been told that they actually want to prepare the English subs (for an international release, I suppose). If I get more time later, I may do some translations for them... I'll keep you posted.

Hmm, works for me, I don't know... By the way, one of the mods has been complaining that the size of my signature exceeds the forum regulations. But I still do not want to remove it... I think it's cool...

OK, seiyuro, here you go:

viewtopic.php?p=500039#500039

There is also an interview with Matsumoto on the DVD. It is not subtitled, but he is quite interesting to look at: he seems extremely cerebral and apathetic (whereas his movies are extremely cerebral and in-your-face). However, it is mixed video/film (29.97fps/23.976fps), so there is no sensible way to do a proper inverse telecine on it. If anybody is still eager to see it, I'll be happy to hear your suggestions. Also, the whole DVD is available at http://www.asiandvdclub.org...
