'Dalla nube alla resistenza' is the only film by Daniele Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub I have managed to see. It is one of the most serious films I have ever encountered, similar in this aspect to the tone found in Andrei Tarkovsky's work, and while this seriousness engaged my intellectual respect, the film's rigorously austere and formal style prevents me from regarding it with enthusiasm.

The actors are flat and monotone in the recitation of their lines; the idea here apparently is that we are supposed to focus on the words as opposed to the people delivering them. Thus, this is a work of the cinema of ideas as opposed to that of sentiment. I do not wish to suggest by this that Huillet and Straub do not wish to engage the audience's emotions--everything I have read about them suggests that they are deeply committed to fundamental humanistic concepts of happiness and freedom. However, they seem to regard a showy display of callow sentiment in the cinema as a betrayal of the depth and breadth of human feeling, and thus adopt a detached and observational stance toward their subjects to allow the audience member to decide for himself how he will choose to feel about what he is seeing and hearing.

Having conceded the overriding austerity of this admittedly difficult work, I must acknowledge the beauty of the Italian countryside that the film frequently conveys. The natural beauty of the film's settings offers a sensuous counterpoint to the cold, almost mathematical strategies the filmmakers adopt in their direction of their actors and in their deployment of the camera.

like the windless delicacy of the air
