El modelo de Eugenio Barba: el actor, un maestro de la mirada.

La Antropología Teatral busca encontrar principios universales útiles para el trabajo del actor. No pretende descubrir leyes, sino estudiar reglas de comportamiento. Estudia el comportamiento fisiológico y sociocultural del hombre en una situación de representación. Eugenio Barba, quien fue discípulo de Jerzy Grotovsky y trabajó junto a él en el Teatro Laboratorio en Polonia, es el fundador de la ISTA International School of Theatre Anthropology), que desde 1980 reúne maestros orientales y occidentales que trabajan en forma conjunta. Barba creó en 1964 el Odin Teatret, grupo cuyo nombre alude al dios de la mitología escandinava, hábil en el arte de la metamorfosis, considerado como el dios de la luz a través de la oscuridad. El grupo tuvo un primer período de intenso aislamiento y experimentación de 10 años. A partir de 1974 comienzan a llevar sus espectáculos y su metodología a distintas partes del mundo desarrollando la actividad que ellos mismos denominan trueque. " Tanto la actividad secreta como el uso del teatro en las regiones sin teatro, nos ha demostrado que es posible transformar nuestro oficio en un instrumento de cambio de nosotros y de los demás. Es esto lo que ha marcado las dos líneas de acción del Odin Teatret"(Eugenio Barba). El riguroso entrenamiento corporal y vocal es lo que caracteriza a este método que combina intensa disciplina y experimentación. Dice Barba: " La rígida distinción entre el teatro y la danza, característica de nuestra cultura, revela una profunda herida, un vacío en la tradición que continuamente conlleva el riesgo de atraer al actor hacia el mutismo del cuerpo, y al bailarín hacia el virtuosismo. Esta distinción parecería absurda a un artista oriental, del mismo modo que a un juglar o a un cómico del siglo XVI".[/quote]

The film IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE IDEA is based on the production by Odin Teatret : "The Gospel According To Oxyrhincus", that is the story of the revolt buried alive, the story of Antigone, and her brother Polynices. And the story of Zusha Mal’ak, who is searching for the Messiah and comes upon a society, which has already found its Messiah. Here they speak Coptic and old Greek, two dead languages, which nobody any longer understands. (THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO OXYRHINCUS was played between 1985 and 1987)[/quote]

This one comes very, very recommended. Don't miss it, Odin is one of the more exciting theatre experience around, and Barba's method and philosophy are full of wisdom and insight. As soon as this one is well-spread I have two very rare training tapes in wich Barba himself shows and talk about Odin's method (with english subs!).
Most of the play is sung in a fake babelic language. Here's the translation of the few places were they talk a real language:
