[quote] It's art; it's fashion. It's good; it's bad. It's sexist; it's not. It's Vanessa Beecroft's performance art. And one's mind can feel like Faye Dunaway's face in that famous slapping scene in "Chinatown" when confronted with it.

Since 1994 Ms. Beecroft, a 29-year-old Italian artist, has become known for pieces involving up to 20 vaguely similar women wearing underwear, high heels (or sneakers), maybe pantyhose or wigs, and not much else. The work has an anthropological logic: the performers and their costume from the city that the performance is taking place.

Ms. Beecroft recently staged her first such event in a New York museum, a one- night at the up-town Guggenheim produced by Yvonne Force Inc. a curatorial consulting company. It was a circuit jamming combination of fashion, theater and art; a two-and-a-half-hour spectacle of languorous immobility and reciprocal staring, appropriately titled "Show" [...]

Supongo que será porque soy un capullo inculto, pero no entiendo una mierda de este arte. Debe de ser algo profundísimo

Art is not something you understand, it's something you do (even when watching).
This is just the documentation of a sort of performance - as shallow as a mechanical
sight on something can be (and then that something is purposedly shallow someone
might say.)

I don't like Beecroft either - there's something wrong on a work which requires (in order to
exist) that its spectator give up any possibility of action (a lot of art works this way sadly)...
how can you stay for hours seeing this languid action and not try to break the silence,
disprove the artist's thesis...
that this doesn't happen says a lot more about the wrecked state of the spectators
than about the artist.

OK, I understand what you mean, but why do we call it art then? If art is something you do this message is art. You can do the same with this mesage that with that performance. Perhaps I have a different concept about art but I personally think that having a group a ladies standing there is just stupid and pretentious.

Anyway, I like watching this things, but I believe that calling Beecroft an artist is non-sense.

I guess there's a fundamental misunderstanding here.
You seem to believe that the fact that I tagged the topic with [art] implies
some kind of judgement by me about the value of this work or about its
creatress Beecroft - I couldn't be more far from this idea, actually I'm totally
disinterested in this kind of judgement ("download this, it's art" - please! :juas: ;) )

With the tag I just meant that this short doesn't come from usual
cinema circuit, but from art-galleries circuit - and god knows how
little art-galleries and art-buyers have to do with art (probably as
much as the anti-christ has to do with our sweet saviour JC).

Don't try these games with me ;) Art is something you do, but art is definitely not anything you do.

I agree. Identifying anyone as an artist is a nonsense.

Bye! :D

Just watched it and I liked it, gives a strange feeling of erieness and emptyness, would watch the full thing. Well for me Art is an expression of the self, an expression were words fail, so I'd consider this art, because indeed it is a form of expression, and a person the expresses feelings giving them shape is an artist regardless of you like it or not, just think of the Vienna Aktionists they piss and shit and well you know what and It is art, it's a form of expression nobody discusses that.

Oh, no, I didn't mean that, maybe I didn't express what I meant correctly. I was not refering to you or anyone who posts this kind of things, I was just saying that, you know, to me having some ladies there is just... stupid. Maybe I change my mind some day but I find this useless. I have to get something from art. If I don't, I feel I'm losing my time, and if I want that I just turn on my TV.

And, again, I'm not telling this to you concretely, I'm talking in general.

Yeah I know that was silly but I don't see much difference, I suppose you understand
