"Lianhua Symphony" AKA: The Story of Lianhua (1937)

Directors: Various filmmakers from Lianhua Film Company
Country: China / China HongKong
Style: Shorts Collection
Color: Black and White
Sound: Mono
IMDB: N/A
Reviews: N/A
2005, this year is the 100th birthday of chinese cinema, since 1905, the first chinese movie -- "Ding Jun Shan" was made, chinese cinema has gone across a whole century.

"The story of Lianhua", is a short collection, made by 8 filmmakers: Shen Fu, Fei Mu, Tan Youliu, Zhu Shilin, Cai Chusheng... all belong to Shanghai Lianhua Film Company, the biggest film company of china at that time. They're the earliest pioneers of chinese film, the "1th generation" chinese filmmakers. Most of them became very famous several years later, Fei Mu's "Spring in the small town" (1948) was considered the NO.1 greatest chinese movie, Cai Chusheng's "The Spring River Flows East" (1947) is the best chinese melodrama ever made, Shen Fu's "The Lights of Ten Thousand Homes" (1949) is also a banned classic... but at 1937, they're all young filmmakers, so Lianhua Film Company decided to gather them make this legendary shorts collection, to show the world their talents and innovations. so the earliest chinese shorts birthed.

Contrasting in film techniques, they're nothing less than those world movie forthgoers like France, Soviet Union, Germany...Fei Mu's "Nightmares in Spring Chamber" is the most avant-garde segment, deeply inflenced by contemporary german expressionistic films like FW Maunu or Franz Lang, symbolic imagery and cinematography earlier than "Citizen Kane" or Felini's "8 1/2"; Shen Fu's "Three Friends" is a vivid comedy about the poor peoples' life in old Shanghai; Zhu Shilin's "The Ghost" is a thriller style short...this short collection is the best heritage from 1930s Shanghai Film Culture, the golden age of chinese cinema.

These Shorts were lost nearly 70 years due to the incessant wars and the Cultural Revolution in china, but now they were rediscovered by China national film cinematheque in 2003. So dont miss this only chance you can see these ultra hard-to-get rarities (i bet you can not find them if you're not living in china. ), in the long long 100 years chinese film history, these are the deepest unknown treasures.

As a side note, this movie was banned in China by Lan Ping (Namely Jiang Qing, Mao's wife, was responsible for launching the catastrophic Cultural Revolution that ruined China, and as a result, she was deeply hated by every Chinese. ), cause she played a minor role in Si-Tu Huimin's segment, all her earlier films were banned by herself during Cultural Revolution. She didnt want peoples know her past.

Thanks, auess!! :D

I just went the day before yesterday to see "New women" by Cai Chusheng. There's an interesting "festival" on chinese silent cinema at Madrid's "Filmoteca Española" (thx to pismak for warning me) :plas:. It was presented by Hu Ke from China's National Filmotheque.

Thanks Auess, and waiting for the last three...

yes, i'v seen "new women" several years ago, very good silent film, and perfect Ruan Lingyu's performance. "Songs of the fishman", "New women" and "spring river flows east" are Cai chusheng's trilogy, all very classic in chinese film history. :)
