Part 4: Fashion and Film
Klein also had his fashion contract with Vogue, and began to bring new ideas into this field. He lacked studio experience, so preferred to take his models out into the street or on location. [...]
His less than serious view of fashion allowed him to concentrate on picture ideas, resulting in some great photographs. These often pick up ideas from his earlier work such as the painting with projected light, but he also introduced other new techniques to fashion photography, including the use of wide-angle and long-focus lenses, long exposures combined with flash and multiple exposures. He posed his models in a group of mannequins, crossing busy streets, surrounded by a crowd whose faces he painted out as blank masks. Klein put his energy into fashion, making exciting and interesting pictures; making fashion an area of innovation in photography, more or less inventing fashion photography as we know it.
Klein also had a career in film, starting by making what has been described as 'the first Pop movie', Broadway by Light in 1958. He went on to produce Muhammad Ali the Greatest,(1964-74) (by far the best film on Ali), The Little Richard Story,(1979) and other works including the experimental films 'Mr Freedom', a hilarious and ferocious anti-American satire banned by the French Government and 'Qui-Ètes Vous Polly Magoo', which satirises, among other things, both art and Vogue.

Steven Puchalski's comment:
Director William Klein will always be a hero of mine, after his incredible anti-US superhero satire, MR. FREEDOM. So, of course, this equally impressive, earlier effort was on my Must-Dredge-Up List. Visually brilliant and subversive as hell, this is French New Wave wackiness with a sledgehammer aftertaste. The feature debut from US expatriate Klein, it's a natural extension of his fashion photographer roots, and in today's era of super-model madness, POLLY is a glorious fart into the face of this media idiocy.
