Nacido en Poughkeepsie (Nueva York), el joven Ed se interesó desde muy pequeño por el cine, especialmente por las películas de terror y del oeste. A los 11 años de edad sus padres le regalaron una cámara de cine, lo cual inició su pasión por la industria cinematográfica.

Tras servir en la Segunda Guerra Mundial (donde años después confesó haber combatido vistiendo ropa interior de mujer), se estableció en Hollywood en 1948. Lugar en el que empezó a actuar en obras de teatro a la vez que intentaba encontrar productores dispuestos a financiar sus proyectos.

Tras varios intentos fallidos, finalmente conoció a Alex Gordon, con el cual escribió algunos guiones y que finalmente le ayudó a conocer a Bela Lugosi, famoso actor de películas de terror durante los años 30, entre cuyos papeles cabe destacar el de Drácula y que, ya en su etapa crepuscular y tras hacerse amigo de Ed, participaría en sus primeras películas.

Glen o Glenda, (1953) fue el debut cinematográfico de Ed y la única película no producida por el mítico director. En ella se trataba el controvertido tema del travestismo, en una época en la que este tema no estaba muy de actualidad.

Su segunda película, La novia del monstruo (1955) supuso la primera incursión del peculiar director en el género de terror, dando el papel protagonista a Bela Lugosi y secundado por el luchador sueco Tor Johnson.

En 1956 muere Bela Lugosi, hecho que significó un duro golpe para Ed, el cual, tras varias incursiones en la televisión y proyectos de menor categoría, finalmente rueda en 1959 la que por muchos es considerada su peor película (o mejor, según como se mire): Plan 9 del espacio exterior. Partiendo de las últimas escenas que rodó Lugosi en vida (apenas 5 minutos), Ed escribió el guión en menos de dos semanas y utilizó metraje sobrante en estudios de otras películas. Con un presupuesto inferior a 6000 dólares, rodó una película con muchos agujeros y fallos de puesta en escena, que difícilmente consiguió un distribuidor y que, no dando beneficios, fue retirada rápidamente de los teatros y salas donde se estrenó.

Al momento de su muerte, en 1978 había quedado en el olvido, hasta que ese mismo año se publicó un libro, The Golden Turkey Awards, que lo definía como el peor director de cine de todos los tiempos.

Pues tienes razón, pero como hice el post inicial bastante deprisa y no hay muchas fotos de ed wood circulando por la red...

Bueno ya solo me queda completar la filmografía con su trabajo como guionista.

Anda, que después de esto se puede quejar nadie sobre qué cosas tienen cabida en divxclásico y cuáles no...(para mí tienen cabida todas las que le interesen a alguien).

De Ed Wood solo he visto las dos más típicas, Plan 9 y y Glen or Glenda, y la verdad es que la segunda no me pareció TAN mala. Claro que yo era bastante pequeño, y que Ed Wood, la de Tim Burton, siempre ha sido una de mis películas favoritas.

Actualemente estoy leyendo este estupendo libro sobre Ed Wood se lo recomiendo a todo aquel interesado en conocer un poco más a fondo a este "curioso" director .
