Actor y escritor británico, nacido en Westhoughton (Inglaterra), el 9 de agosto de 1927. Tras el suicidio de su padre en 1939, Robert Shaw creció en Escocia y en Cornualles, lugares en donde comenzó desde muy joven a cultivar sus dos grandes pasiones, la literatura y la interpretación.
Estudió en la Royal Academic of Dramatic Art y a los 22 años ya era un consumado actor teatral en la Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. En el cine, Shaw comenzó a intervenir en breves papeles en producciones de su país como "Oro en barras" (1951) de Charles Chrichton.
Su primer papel importante sería junto a Sean Connery y Daniela Bianchi en "Desde Rusia con amor" (1963), película de James Bond que dirigió Terence Young.
A lo largo de las décadas de los 60 y 70 Robert Shaw intervino, generalmente como actor secundario, en conocidas producciones cinematográficas y publicó diversas novelas y obras de teatro.
Sus películas más importantes fueron "La batalla de las Ardenas" (1965) de Ken Annakin, "Un hombre para la eternidad" (1966) de Fred Zinnemann, "The Birthday Party" (1968) de William Friedkin, "El equívoco" (1973) de Alan Bridges, "El golpe" (1973) de George Roy Hill, "Pelham, Uno, dos, tres" (1974) de Joseph Sargent, "Tiburón (1975) de Steven Spielberg, "Robin y Marian" (1976) de Richard Lester o "Domingo negro" (1977), film dirigido por John Frankenheimer.
En 1966, por su excelente encarnación del rey inglés Enrique VIII, Robert Shaw recibió su única nominación al premio Oscar como mejor actor secundario. El ganador sería Walter Matthau, por su interpretación en la película de Billy Wilder "En bandeja de plata".
Shaw contrajo matrimonio en tres ocasiones. La primera en 1952 con Jennifer Bourke, la segunda con la actriz escocesa Mary Ure, con quien se casó en 1963.
Mary y Robert coincidieron en tres ocasiones en la pantalla grande: "The luck of Ginger Coffey" (1964), un título canadiense realizado por Irvin Kershner, "La última aventura" (1968) de Robert Siodmak y la película de terror "Un reflejo de miedo" (1972), que dirigió William A. Fraker.
En 1975, Mary Ure falleció de una sobredosis de alcohol y barbitúricos, dejando viudo a Shaw, quien se casaría un año más tarde con su última esposa, Virginia Jansen.
El matrimonio duró solamente dos años, ya que el actor inglés moriría a causa de un ataque al corazón el 28 de agosto de 1978. Tenía 51 años.
