Sinopsis: Después de leer el cuento de Lewis Carroll, Alicia (Kristýna Kohoutová) se queda dormida en su cuarto rodeada de sus juguetes, y en sus sueños es transportada al País de las Maravillas. A medida que ella persigue al escurridizo Conejo Blanco, su sueño la conduce a través de peligrosas aventuras en las profundidades del Reino de la Niñez, las que culminan con su juzgamiento en la corte del Rey y la Reina de Corazones. Synopsis: A memorably bizarre screen version of Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", mixing one live actor (Alice) with a large variety of stop-motion animated creatures, ranging from the complex (the White Rabbit) to the incredibly simple (the Caterpillar, consisting of a sock, a couple of glass eyes and a pair of false teeth). The original story is followed reasonably faithfully, though those familiar with this director's other films won't be the least bit surprised by the numerous digressions into Svankmajer territory, living slabs of meat and all. As the opening narration says, it's a film made for children... perhaps?

Svankmajer's sinister visual music has an irresistible potency and allure. Watching it, we feel the enthrallment of the irrational. It takes us back to a time in the history of movies when audiences responded to the images on screen with a combination of awe and fear, when in submitting to them, we felt as if we were submitting to a spell. -- Hal Hinson
