'NIGHT CROSSING,' FLIGHT FROM WEST GERMANY
By JANET MASLIN
Published: February 5, 1982
''COME on - we're going for a ride!'' ''Going for a ride in that?'' ''Why are you cleaning the bathtub now?'' ''When the police find out we've gone, they'll be in here, and I won't have them all saying I'm a bad housekeeper!''
''You're su re? Even though you don't believe in the balloon?'' ''I believe in yo u!'' Those are s ome lines from ''Night Crossing,'' a Disney movie that isn't much go od but is still, in its flatfooted way, quite entertaining. It's about a 1979 escape from East Germany by two families who secretly manufactured a homemade taffeta balloon, thus causing - the screenplay doesn't mention this, but it must be true - a party-dress shortage of heartbreaking proportions. This may be the only adventur e film ever to feature suspenseful footage of two men taking turns at the sewing machine. But it's suspenseful anyhow.
''Night Crossing,'' which opens today at the Guild, is about the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, played, respectively, by John Hurt and Jane Alexander and Beau Bridges and Glynnis O'Connor. Doug McKeon, much easier to take here than he was in ''On Golden Pond,'' plays one of the Strelzyk children, and his little brother Keith plays his little brother.
All four of the adults are terrifically tearful during the portion of the movie that details their painful decision to float across the Iron Curtain. B ut when they finally take off, the story does, too.
There were two escape attempts in all, one by the Strelzyks and their two children, the other by both families. The failure of the first trip made the second terribly dangerous. The journey apparently took only 30 minutes or so. But it's excitingly filmed and that short time feels like an eternity.
The unusual nature of its subject works to the advantage of ''Night Crossing,'' because the audience is bound to be intrigued by the simple logistics of the escape. How did they corral all that taffeta? How was the balloon assembled, and what was their homemade system of inflating it? How did they make sure it would fly, and what happened when their fuel ran out? The movie elaborates patiently on all these things, and the details are bound to seem interesting, especially to children.
The film has been directed with a reassuring corniness by Delbert Mann, and the performers tend toward white-knuckled overstatement. The real star of ''Night Crossing,'' however, is the balloon, which performs splendidly, even if it doesn't look the least bit homemade. The balloon-stunt people have done an especially praiseworthy job.
As for the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, the production notes say they live in West Germany, where one father owns an electrical-supply store and the other ''has realized his dream of becoming an auto mechanic.'' Now, as a closing title in the movie puts it, ''the children are free to reach for the sky -without the help of a balloon.''
One of the first things the families did after reaching the West was to visit Disneyland.
