Ausencia.La película que puso en el mapamundi cinematográfico al serbio Emir Kusturica, y que le dio la Palma de Oro en Cannes. A través de la mirada de un niño somos testigos de las férreas condiciones de vida del régimen de Tito en la antigua Yugoslavia, un país que mantiene su unión artificiamente, a través de elementos como el deporte. El padre del chico será deportado a un campo de trabajo, aunque la explicación oficial, mentira piadosa para el hijo, es que se encuentra en viaje de negocios.
El acierto del director es combinar la mirada política con el humanismo, y todo ello servido con ajustada sutileza, pues el film está rodado en plena era comunista (DeCine21).

A careless remark about the newspaper cartoon is enough for Mesha to join many arrested unfortunates. His family is now forced to cope with the situation and wait for his release from prison. The story is told from the perspective of Malik, his young son who believes the mother's story about father being "away on business".
AMG SYNOPSIS: The Yugoslavian When Father Was Away on Business (Otac na Sluzbenoh Putu) takes place in the early 1950s. The title is a euphemism: because of the strained relationship between Yugoslavia and the USSR, various private citizens have disappeared in the middle of the night, accompanied by the police. One such "vanishing" individual is Miki Manojlovic, the father of 6-year old Moreno D'E Bartolli, from whose viewpoint this story is told When Manojlovic, an employee in the labor ministry is whisked away to prison, his family reacts with pride, assuring one and all that he is "away on business" because of his fervent political beliefs. The sad truth: Manojlovic has ended up behind bars because of his sexual peccadilloes. The film details the tribulations of a fatherless family struggling to cope with the financial deprivations of Communism. Director Emir Kusturica won the Cannes Film Festival Golden Palm award for his work on When Father Was Away on Business. -- Hal Erickson
