Description:
Set in London, Mortensen plays Nikolai Luzhin, a ‘driver’ for a crime family that originated in Russia. He’s the right hand – and fix-it-up-guy – for Kirill (Cassel), the out-of-control son of crime boss Semyon (Muller-Stahl delivers another amazingly nuanced performance). Nikolai meets someone from an entirely different world when Anna Khitrova (Naomi Watts), a London midwife whose Russian name comes from her deceased father, arrives at Semyon's restaurant in search of information. She is trying to track down the family of a 14-year-old Russian girl who died in childbirth at the hospital, and the girl’s diary has led Anna to the restaurant.


Taut, smart and brutal, without a single extraneous moment making it into the movie’s final cut, Eastern Promises is both fascinating and exciting. There are twists, and every one of those is entirely believable. Punctuated by one of the most intense, brutal and authentic-looking fight scenes I have ever witnessed, the film neither minces words nor holds back in showing us the dark reality of Nikolai’s world.
