Sinopsis:
Francesca es una joven viuda embarazada que viaja desde Los Ángeles a un remoto pueblo en Minnesota para visitar a su suegra, a la que aún no conoce, siguiendo las últimas voluntades de su fallecido marido. Cuando llega a la casa, queda sorprendida por el incomprensible trato hostil que está recibiendo por parte de su suegra. Following the death of her husband, Matthew, Francesca decides to pay his mother a visit, to tell her of the imminent birth of her grandchild; the mother Matthew always assured her she'd like. On her arrival at the house though, she finds Mrs. Kinsolving to be less than cordial - borderline hostile in fact - and resolves to leave as soon as possible. Unfortunately, a fierce snowstorm and lack of transport mean she's forced to spend the night, which starts her down a path of unplesant discovery; dark family secrets and revelations waiting to ambush her.
There's not a lot of obvious thrills in this thriller but it's an engaging character study, heavy on atmosphere, with a couple of strong central performances from Patty Duke as Francesca, and Rosemary Murphy, who brings Mrs. Kinsolving to the screen with a twisted bitterness that's palpable. Atmosphere is king though - the location is used to maximum effect, every room having its own peculiar character. The camera prowls the corridors and leers over the top of balustrades with queasy menace, making the most of the deep shadows. Outside it's always snowing, which has an oddly comforting effect, despite the intense claustrophobia of the gloomy interior. It's always nice to be inside when there's a storm raging without, even when inside is home to an unhinged family that probably want you dead!
It's quite an old-fashioned housebound thriller that reminded me of The Spiral Staircase - it's less melodramatic than that film, but there are clear parallels in the setting, with the constant storm outside, as well as a mute girl being one of the key protagonists. It could, and maybe should, have gone to much darker places, both physically and psychologically, but the atmosphere and nuanced performances, combined with a taut script that gradually gives up its secrets, keep you hooked.
