Sinopsis:

Jean y Juliette contraen matrimonio y emprenden su viaje de bodas a bordo de L'Atalante, una barcaza de la cual Jean es capitán. Junto con el marinero Père Jules y un joven cabinero, la pareja navega por los canales cercanos al Sena. El largo viaje resulta aburrido para Juliette, quien ansía conocer la Ciudad de la luz. Jean cumple entonces el deseo de su joven esposa y la lleva a París. (FILMAFFINITY)

Restored in 4K in 2017 by Gaumont, distributed in Japan by IVC (International Visual Corporation).
- The restoration work was carried out at L'Immagine Ritrovata and in the laboratories of L'Image Retrouvée, with support from Cinémathèque Française, The Film Foundation (founded by Martin Scorsese), and CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée), based on original copies of first-generation nitrate source kept by BFI, Cineteca Italiana, and Cinémathèque Française.

Several restorations were attempted over the years, but they often lacked knowledge of what Vigo’s choices had been. In 1990, thanks in part to the discovery of a 1934 L’Atalante print in London, a new restoration was made, but the temptation to add beautiful outtakes, which were also found at the time, proved too strong. Since then, French historian Bernard Eisenschitz has been working on constituting a new version that is as close as possible to the director’s original cut. (link)

Thanks to the collaboration of numerous cinematheques (La Cinematheque Francaise, Cineteca Italiana in Milan, BFI National Film Archive, Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique) that loaned their prints, a frame-by-frame comparison from several different versions was completed to note scene variations. Using the edge codes, the film stocks were dated to choose the earliest and best version for the 4K scan.

The same workflow was utilized for the sound restoration; comparison of all the elements to obtain the best audio quality. It was especially important to respect the integrity of the original score by Maurice Jaubert.

With this restoration, Gaumont, Luce Vigo, who passed away on February 12th, and Bernard Eisenschitz, completed many years of research on the existing film material, writings, documents, and testimonies, always staying faithful to the intentions of Jean Vigo.
